I opened my eyes to one of the brightest lights I've ever seen. Everything was white, it was like the world around me was glowing.
I took a deep breath with pain followed behind it. I had a mask over my mouth and nose and I was connected to a machine. My heart rate quickened which made a little beeping sound start.
A nurse rushed through the door and went over to the counter. I could see her filling a syringe with something and I shook my head no.
"You can't be awake, you need to relax so you can heal." she said, sticking it into me. I started struggling against it but she held down my arm and pressed the plunger in. She took it out and I worked myself up even more until I relaxed and went unconscious again.
My eyes shot open, this time I was in a different room the machine still hooked up to me. I couldn't think, I just needed to get out. I took the mask off and instantly regretted it.
I couldn't breath without it. The beeping went off again and two nurses came in this time. The male holding me down as the female went for the sedative again.
I realized that I wanted Christen or Kelley or someone in here. I needed to see someone, anyone. She stuck the needle in again and I shook my head hard again.
I didn't want to sleep. Tears slipped out of my eyes as she pushed more drugs into me. The man put the mask on me again and they both left, knowing it would kick in within seconds.
This kept on repeating and repeating. Each time ending up the same way, me being sedated. It was like I was stuck in a loop. Everything was on replay and I hated it.
A different room again. I decided not to rile myself up this time. To my surprise, the breathing mask was off and I wasn't struggling for air anymore.
I looked around and saw Christen sleeping in a chair with Ash's arm wrapped around her. She saw me looking at them and gave me a smile.
"Welcome back Tobin, she said quietly, not wanting to wake up Christen. I furrowed my eyebrows as I looked at Christen. "Don't worry, I'm not making moves, she just needed comforting."
I went to say something but my voice came out hoarsely. It wasn't even audible to myself and I was the one saying it. Ash pressed a button on a remote and in a few minutes, a doctor arrived.
"Ah yes, it's nice to see you awake." she said in a bubbly voice. "I'm doctor Spencer and I am the one in charge of you. You are quite the feisty one when it comes to getting you better. Let me just give you a quick run down, okay?"
I nodded my head and she pulled up a swivel chair and sat down next to the bed. She cleared her throat before explaining.
"So, you have some bruising on your leg which wasn't a big concern. The cuts and punctures on your body however got all cleaned out so there's no infection. No stitches were needed either by the way, so that's good." she said smiling and giving me a thumbs up. This seems like one of those 'and now to the bad news' kind of pauses. "Your airway was damaged and your right lung was spasming due to the blood building up in your chest which was probably causing a drowning sensation. Along with also being the main reason you weren't able to catch your breath. At first you needed the machine to breathe for you and kind of kick-start your lungs."
I was listening to all of this and slightly nodding the entire time. What a mess I am huh?
"We couldn't have you add too much stress or else the process of helping you breathe on your own would have been slower, that is why were kept getting sedated. As for your throat goes, just give it until tomorrow afternoon to be safe for it to heal itself." she stopped and turned to the counter and spun back with a syringe without a needle that contained a white liquid in it. "This will help the cells come back quicker, you can't swallow it at first thought, you need to get it on as much of the airway as it can, then you can feel free to swallow it or if you end up coughing it up, that's fine too."
She handed me the syringe and I studied it. This looks horrible, I don't think this should be swallowed anyways.
"Either I can do it or you can have your friends help you do it, whichever makes you more comfortable." she said. I pointed to Ash and a sleepy Christen. She understood and walked to the door. "If you need anything just push the button and I'll be here as soon as I can."
Ash shook Christen slightly, causing her to yawn and stretch her arms out. She kept her eyes closed and went back into her side.
"Chris, we need to help Tobin with some medicine." Ash said, shaking her again. Her eyes fluttered open and she looked at me. Realization hit her and she got up and wrapped her arms around my body.
I raised my arm slightly and put my hand on her side, it was about as much as I could embrace her right now. She released me and turned to Ashlyn.
"What do we have to do?" she asked. Ash walked to the other side of the bed and took the syringe out of my hand. I really didn't want to do this but I knew I had to.
"She pretty much has to choke and cough this up until enough coats her windpipe to help the cells grow back and heal. I'll push it down, you need to make sure she doesn't thrash around too much." she said, Christen held my hand in hers and put the other on my chest to hold me down.
It was brutally disgusting and painful but we got it done. I relaxed down a bit and started to fall asleep. Christen was at my side holding my hand the entire time.
"I'm going to check on Leo, he just got out of surgery. It was a success, he needed a few screws and a plate put in but he's doing good. He'll be casted up soon and ready to go home. I'll ask when you'll be able to go too." Ash said, standing up. She walked out if the door so I was left to myself and Christen.
"I'm sorry this happened to you. It really should have been me carrying the necklace." she said looking at our hands and not at me. I gave hers a slight squeeze causing her to look back at me. I smiled and shook my head. I think she understood what I meant.
I started falling asleep to the sound of her steady breathing. The last thing I saw were her beautiful eyes and my thoughts had been filled with her.
