I like to say that when dealing with someone crazy, there comes a time where they're certified as crazy in your mind. I'd always known Sheila Escovedo was a nutcase but this day, one of her boldest, certified it for me and I'll never forget.
The day Sheila's possessiveness really clicked for me was far too delayed. Far, far too delayed. It started out as a mild day. Sheila was doing a show in her home region. I wasn't invited by Prince, believe it or not, I was invited by Sheila. Once I was off the market and paired up with someone she'd introduced me to, I was in every single one of her good graces. I was no longer a threat and because I was no longer a threat, I was given the stamp of being a friend, a title she probably chose because of how close Prince and I still were. Nothing between Prince and I was changing any time soon, leading to Sheila cutting the nasty nice act and laying it on thick.
Too bad I wasn't the only one she was laying something on that day...
Sheila floated in on cloud fifteen, a bright smile on her face, completely oblivious to the budding tension amongst those who saw what happened. Half of the room was anti-Sheila and I was in on it. She just couldn't resist the temptation of staking claims on someone who'd already been claimed.
There they were, in the middle of grinding their asses together during A Love Bizarre when she decided to reach back and catch herself a full grab of Prince. Susannah was there. She was there wearing the engagement gifted to her in France. Hell would've had to have froze over for me to root for Sheila after she treated me the way she was treating me when we met. I don't know what she expected to happen. What she did was far too distasteful and it was messy. The camp had been far more susceptible to arguments after Prince extended the band. Messy behavior like Sheila displayed was nothing but a gas leak and too many people around were smokers.
All of that for Prince? I didn't get it. Yeah, I'll do almost anything to please my fans during a show. I'd gyrate against Prince too. Although, there is a line— a microscopically thin line— between putting on a show for the audience and putting on a show for those who know you. I'll play along with him for a bit but when you make it personal, it's over. Everybody knew everything about that move was personal. While we may not have talked about it for obvious reasons, Prince hid nothing. Prince is most fond of casual dating. Casual dating allows him the space to not have a reason to explain himself to anyone unless he wanted to. The problem in that was Susannah was his fiancée, he owed her one.
Susannah stomped away from the side of the stage on the verge of tears! I remember it like it was yesterday. It looked like Prince was on the best of his behavior from my position at the time. He'd chat away to me about the past but there was no way he'd admit to me he was cheating. I chose to give him the benefit of doubting his possible infidelity. I was impressed by the way he behaved in regards to being engaged.
"What's up, guys?"
The band murmured their greetings quietly in a disarray of sequences. They knew what's coming, so did Sheila, that's the reason everybody is looking at her like she was crazy. We all kept our mouthes shut, especially me. I'd grown to get along with her and it wasn't my business. That was a stupid move on her part. She knew what would have happen and she did it anyway? Selfish wasn't the only word. The following should have been a compound word. Attention-Seeking.
