December, 1963For being 11pm on a Tuesday, the streets of London were fairly busy. Tessa and Franny had to continually step out of the way to avoid running into someone. They had taken a lesser known street in hopes of having less of a crowd, but it seemed they were out of luck.
The girls were exhausted after a long day in the studio. The whole school was practicing for the spring recital at the Royal Opera House. This was always a crazy time for the ballet school and everyone was working their butts off to be ready.
When they were finished with the long day of practice, Tessa wanted to go back to her room and take a long shower and get to sleep. But her roommate, Franny, suggested that the two go get something to eat at a cafe she had tried a week ago and wind down after practice.
Tessa hadn't eaten all day and jumped on the idea. Unfortunately, she had no idea that Franny meant a cafe that was practically on the other side of London. The girls had been wandering around for nearly an hour in the freezing cold, and Franny didn't seem to be any closer to finding the cafe then she was an hour ago. Tessa was about ready to call it quits at this point.
The girls turned the corner and heard The Beatles, All My Loving, crooning out of an open shop. The song had been released less then a month ago and it had already rocketed to the top of the charts and was played practically everywhere.
Recently, England had been swept up in Beatlemania, a craze brought on by four head shaking guys from Liverpool that made girls go absolutely nuts, including Franny.
Tessa didn't have a problem with the Beatles. Their music was very catchy and they were very entertaining to watch. But if you were forced to listen to only their music and live in a dorm with their faces plastered to the wall, then you too would also get sick of them. It seemed that all Franny could talk about was the Beatles. During the Summer, before they became really big in England, Franny managed to score two tickets to one of their shows and invited Tessa. It was probably the most fun she had at a concert and could understand why girls could go gaga over the four boys from Liverpool.
"Ahh Tess, I love this song!!" Franny halted to a stop in front of the store and started dancing to the music, oblivious to the looks she was getting from people. From the way she was dancing, like some deranged monkey, nobody would ever believe she was a student at the Royal Ballet.
"Alright, let's go Franny," Tessa tugged her along when she watched her friend almost take out a a bystander while flailing her arms. "We still have to find that cafe and besides, you already have that song. We probably listened to it half a hundred times today alone."
"But you can never play their songs too many times, anyway I have no idea where we are!" Franny whined.
"Then let's just head back to the Tube and get food closer to the school. We can come looking for it when we have more time."
"Fine, we can look for it some other time." Franny agreed but seemed upset about not finding the cafe.
The girls started to retrace their steps back to the Tube. They eventually came to a street that seemed to be hopping with young people. Music was blasting from all different clubs and people in crazy clothes that Tessa had only seen in magazines walked past. The smell of booze and tobacco was very strong.
"Oh Tess, can we please stop here for a little bit?!" Franny frowned when she saw the look on Tess's face. "Please! Please! It will be fun and only for a while!!" Franny whined at Tess.
"No, I'm hungry and tired and we have practice tomorrow. How would you like to have a seven hour practice hungover?" One look at Franny's face told her the answer. "Thought so. Now let's get going before someone notices we left."
