One of the wonderful things about living in the country was the peace and quiet. The only sounds you would hear were the crickets chirping and the wind blowing the few trees near the house.
But tonight was not peaceful at all.
Tessa was laying down in her bed and staring at the ceiling, unable to go to sleep.
For a while, she had been listening to her parents and sister screaming at each other from downstairs.
It was the third time this week that Janet had arrived home, long after Tessa and Patrick had been sent to bed. Since then, she and Tessa's parents couldn't stop the fighting.
It made it impossible for Tessa to get to sleep.
So instead, she lay in bed and listened.
Tessa was scared, but she wasn't shocked that they were arguing. For the last couple of months, things had been really tense at home.
It all started when Janet got a boyfriend. His name was Sam, and Janet was obsessed with him. The rest of the family was not.
For starters, he was two years older than Janet; already seventeen to her fifteen. He was also captain of the football team, which made him very popular and very cocky.
There was also the fact that he thought it was perfectly fine to keep Janet out past her curfew.
Tessa didn't really like him that much. And, she knew her parents didn't like him much either, as evident by their screaming.
"...we expected you an hour ago!"
"...just ran a little late..."
"You're the oldest! We expect more from you..."
"...stop blaming me!"
"...just act your age!"
"I hate you!"
Tessa's eyes widened when Janet shouted those words. As long as she had known her sister, Janet had never said anything of the sort to her parents.
"You don't mean that.." Tessa heard her mother get quiet. They must have been closer to the bottom of the stairs than she thought.
"I do mean that." Janet asserted
"You apologize right now!" Father shouted.
"I will not!"
Tessa heard loud stomps coming up the stairs.
"Janet, you get back here!" Her father shouted in vain. "If you don't, you're never seeing that boy again!"
All he got in response was a slammed door.
Tessa strained to hear her parent's conversation, but their low mumbling made it impossible to hear anything. She continued to stare at the ceiling, her mind racing a mile a minute.
