"Does one of you care to explain what I saw back here?" Principal Robinson asked.
Me and Jeff exchanged glances and Jeff finally spoke up. "You saw me and my fiancee kissing in my classroom."
"Fiancee?" The principal repeated, amused.
"Yes...we're supposed to be getting married January 5th....Scar's birthday. Our parents arranged it. There's a contract and everything...it's legal, sir." Jeff explained.
"Is this true Ms. Williams?" The principal asked, turning to me.
I nodded my head. "Yes, sir." I said in a diffidently (A/N. Diffident is one of my SAT words.) ...I was a nervous wreck. I didn't know what would happen.
The principal nodded his head once and turned back to Jeff. "I'll need to see the contract Jeff. Without it I have to treat this situation like any other. Until you show me the contract you're suspended with pay and Scarlette you're suspended until further notice."
My eyes widened in horror. Suspended? No!
"Sir, please. Whatever you do, don't suspend Scar. She got accepted into Harvard...They could take away her scholarship for this." Jeff pleaded.
"Listen, after I see the contract, the suspension will be wiped off her transcripts and permanent record. No harm will be done." He explained.
"If I show you the contract now, will this all go away?" Jeff asked.
"Of course. Do you have it with you?"
"No. But I can make a call right now and it'll be here in 10 minutes tops."
"Ok. Make the call."
Jeff took his phone out from his pocket, got up and went outside to make the call, leaving me alone with the principal. "So Scarlette, how long have you known Jeff?" Principal Robinson asked, trying to make conversation and make this less awkward.
"A few days."
"And it took you only a few days to fall in love?"
"Not exactly. Jeff...Mr.King...has been in love with me since he was 9 and I was 2. I just haven't seen him since we were that age...I don't even remember meeting him then I was so young. But I guess you can say it was love at first sight."
Jeff finally came back. "Ok. My mother will be here shortly."
15 minutes later...
"Alright I'm here!" Jeff's Mom said, out of breath. "Here's the contract Mr. Robinson. Written in black and white, perfectly legal, and properly written." She placed the contract down on his desk.
Mr. Robinson looked it over. "Alright Jeff, Scarlette. You've gotten yourselves out of suspension. But I'm afraid I'm gonna have to take Scarlette out of your class Jeff."
Jeff nodded his head. "That's understandable, sir."
"It is. We can't have you playing favorites or getting distracted during class. I'll have her taken out of your class immediately."
"Alright. Is that it sir?"
"Yes. That'll be all. Scarlette you may go to your next class and Jeff you may go teach your class. There's a sub in there right now so you can dismiss them of you wish. " Mr. Robinson instructed.
"Ok. Thank you, sir." Jeff got up to shake the principal's hand.
"Just don't let anyone else catch you two again."
"Wouldn't dream of it." Jeff replied. "Come on Scar, I'll walk you back to class...the teacher will be mad if you don't have a pass."
I smiled at him.
