"Chloe? Hey, sweetheart, you want to wake up for me?"
Chloe groaned as a hazy voice spoke in her ear, drawing her out of her groggy state. Everything ached and her muscles felt so heavy, like cement. She couldn't remember anything, and all she saw was darkness. The voice kept speaking, low and silky, seeming to draw her out of- was she sleeping? Was she in a trance? She couldn't remember. She managed to get enough strength to shift her weight, but her eyes still felt thick.
"That's it, just follow the sound of my voice, okay? Everything's going to be fine."
Chloe attempted to open her eyes, finding herself instantly blinded by a bright yellow light. Squeezing her eyes closed again, she took a gulp of air, her chest protesting painfully.
"Almost there, Chloe, just a little further."
Chloe tried opening her eyes again, this time finding a face hovering a few inches away; alarmed, she jumped back, hitting her back against a wall. Fully awake she began to adjust to her surroundings, the face in front of her was that of a man she'd seen on the news, he had dark eyes, cropped short, and dark, soulless eyes; what had his name been? She couldn't remember.
"I know you!" she choked out, her voice sounded like nails on a chalkboard. She tried to scoot away, but she'd backed up as far as she could.
"Oh, I'm sure you do, but you have nothing to be afraid of." He reached to stroke her hair, and she swatted him away. Her chuckled darkly, standing up to straighten his black trench coat.
"She'll make a fine specimen," he said," You were smart to spare her."
Chloe stared, looking past him to find a younger guy leaning against the doorframe of the small room, his arms crossed across his chest. She narrowed her eyes at him; those green eyes- she'd seen them before.
"Hmm," he said," she has a strong will, and that I admire."
His voice was heavily accented, which confused Chloe even more. "Who are you people?" she managed to spit out.
They looked back at her, and the guy leaning against the door walked in, bending down in front of her.
"Don't you remember me?" he asked, his green eyes glinting.
Chloe squinted at him, and it all came back, hitting her like a piece of flying metal. Her mother, Stormy, his deal- all of it.
"You- you killed my mom," she realized, her voice squeaking.
"Yeah, I did," he said, not batting an eye," but you didn't do what you were told like a good little girl, so your mommy had to die."
She stared at him, not sure what to do or say or even what to think. This monster had murdered her mother and she couldn't even cry, why couldn't she cry? And even worse, why didn't she get up and attempt to strangle him?
He stood back up, turning back towards the other man.
"And you're positive she's one of them?"
The man in the trench coat nodded," And with a personality like hers, she could be just the asset your queen is looking for."
"I'll be the judge of that."
They cast another look at her before leaving, closing the steel door behind them.
Chloe was too worn to move or to even fear what might happen to her, but what had he meant when he said 'one of them'? Asset? Queen? They were obviously psycho, but what exactly did they plan on doing with her?
