Stevie's heart dropped; she lifted her head and tried to see her baby.
She saw her daughter being worked on by a team of doctors and nurses.

"Why isn't she crying?!" Stevie sobbed.
Lindsey held her hand tighter and spoke to her trying to calm her. "They're working on her Steph, she moving, I can see her. They are just trying to get her to cry now."
Stevie began to try lift her body up to see; just then she heard it; her baby girl's cry. It was a loud piercing, and strong cry."
Stevie sobbed harder and relaxed back into her pillow.

"Whoa! For a preemie she has a nice set of lungs there." Dr. Williams chuckled, then said. "They are going to take her to get checked out in the nicu. You will get to see her real soon. Okay, Stevie, we are going to deliver the placenta now."
Stevie nodded, too tired to do anything else.

A few minutes passed, Stevie was freshened up, she now wore a new hospital gown and was moved into a new room.
Lindsey stayed with Stevie while Barbara went to tell friends and family that were in the waiting room what was going on.

Stevie laid in her hospital bed quietly crying; Lindsey noticed then gently laid down next to her and embraced her in his arms.
"I didn't get to see her! I want to see my baby Linds. I need to hold her in my arms!" Stevie sobbed.
"You will Steph! You'll get your chance real soon. They just took her to the nicu as a precaution. I'm sure Dr. Williams will be here soon to give us an update." Lindsey said, he kissed the top of her head and continued to comfort her.

Barbara had come back into the room and asked if she was up for visitors which she replied that she wasn't ready for visitors until she knew her baby girl was okay.
Barbara gave her a quick kiss and hug before returning to the waiting room of eager family members and friends.

Stevie began to drift off to sleep when the door opened a few moments later.
Dr. Williams walked through the door.
She smiled at Stevie and Lindsey; she wheeled in Stevie's daughter who was awake, lying in a tiny hospital bassinet.
Stevie sat up with Lindsey's help and couldn't take her eye off of it. Lindsey moved to the side but stayed close so Stevie could have her moment with her daughter.

"Someone wants to meet you mommy." Dr. Williams said brightly. She picked the baby up then walked over to Stevie and placed the baby girl in Stevie's arms.
Stevie's eyes brimmed with tears as she took in the face of her baby girl. She smiled and placed a gentle kiss on her little forehead.
Stevie's tears of joy spilled over cheeks; she thought her heart would burst.
"Hi baby girl I'm your mommy. I love you so much." Stevie said as the baby instantly recognized her voice.

Dr. Williams smiled wide. "She gave us scare in the beginning but we checked her over and she's doing great. Her lungs are strong, she's breathing on her own just fine. She's five pounds, six ounces." She said filling Stevie in. "I have to say, now that everyone is fine now, that I was worried about you Stephanie and your daughter. As you know we talked about everything that could happen due to your age but none of those things happened." Dr. Williams stepped closer and said. "It was as if you had a guardian angel looking after you and your baby."
Stevie looked at Dr. Williams then nodded her head in agreement and smiled back.
"I'm going to send in a lactation nurse to come to your room in a few minutes for her first feeding. For now I'll leave so you can bond with your daughter. I'll check on you later."

Stevie continued to stare her baby girl once Dr. Williams left the room.
Lindsey was standing back watching Stevie and her daughter. It was the most beautiful sight he had ever seen.
Stevie looked up at Lindsey when she heard him sniffling. "Linds?"
Lindsey stepped closer and smiled. "Sorry it's just...this is the most amazing sight I have ever seen. She looks a lot like you; she has all your features. Even your eyes."
Stevie smiled at him then she looked back at her baby; she tried to stay away from the thoughts but she couldn't help but think about Don. Her baby didn't look anything like him.
Her genes dominated his; but even then if she had looked like him, Stevie would still love her daughter no matter what.

Stevie looked at him and said. "I think it was Robin. She was the one taking care of us; I felt something there. I felt so tired and I wanted to give up but I had a feeling that helped me keep going." Stevie wiped her tears.

After a moment of silence, Lindsey sat by Stevie on the bed.
"Do you want to hold her?" Stevie asked.
Lindsey looked at her and nodded with a smile.
"Of course. I would love to."
Stevie gently placed the baby in his arms; she laid back and watched.
"Have you chosen a name?" Lindsey asked Stevie softly.
"Melody." She replied. "Her whole name is Melody Robin Nicks."
Lindsey smiled wide. "Hi Melody. I'm..." He stopped and thought for a moment. He looked at Stevie. "Steph...I want to talk to you about something that I've been thinking a lot about."
Stevie's brow furrowed. "Yes? What is it?"
He took a deep breath but before he could speak there was a knock on the door.
It was the lactation nurse; she walked in and introduced herself. Lindsey handed the baby back to Stevie, and took a step back into a corner to allow Stevie some privacy.
The nurse went through the steps with Stevie on how to get the baby to latch on.
Stevie was nervous; but instantly relaxed as the baby latched on on the second try.
A fresh wave of tears rolled down her cheeks.
She couldn't believe she was here right now feeding her daughter. She felt like she was on top of the world.

The nurse excused herself so Stevie could bond with her baby without her there. Lindsey gave Stevie a few minutes, he didn't want to interrupt this moment.

After giving her some time Lindsey stepped closer and wiped Stevie's tears away. "You look so beautiful Stephanie."
Stevie looked up at him; he leaned down and placed a kiss on her lips. She kissed him back without a second thought.
Lindsey pulled away and began to speak. "Steph, I've been doing a lot of thinking for the past few months. You know how much I love you; I want to spend the rest of my life with you...I wanted to ask...would you allow me to be Melody's father?"
Stevie stared wide eyed. "What? You want...even though she isn't yours?"
Lindsey sat down again and took her free hand in his. "She's mine Steph; she's ours. I can feel it in my heart. Please Steph, allow me the honor of being her father. Allow her to be a Buckingham. And hopefully one day you can be a Buckingham too."
Stevie looked down at Melody who just finished eating. Stevie fixed her hospital gown and gently stroked her baby's cheek and thought long and hard.
Lindsey was getting anxious.
Stevie looked up at Lindsey once again. "Melody...say hello to daddy." She said placing Melody in his arms with a smile on her face.
Lindsey smiled at his daughter then leaned down to kiss her forehead. "I love you and your mommy so much, with all my heart."
