Panic swelled within me, threatening to take over completely. Keep running, that's all you can do. Just dont stop or turn back. What am I doing?! This is crazy!! Calm down, panicking won't solve anything. You can't give in to fear! But if they catch me we're- No! Keep going! Even if you turn back, nothing will change! But I- Look, do you want a change at freedom or do you want to surrender without a fight? Ok ok... You make a good point. I'm pretty much dead either way, may as well go out fighting... That's the spirit! No lets go, they're gaining on us! WHAT?!
Heavy footsteps thundered behind me as I rounded a bend in the tunnel. Hope flared in me as I saw a faint light beginning to form amid the gloom of the passage. Almost there... Just keep going! I burst out into the crowded street, taken aback by the sudden brightness and change of scenery. The sides of the road were lined with colorful booths selling every kind of food, clothing and material. Merchants shouted into the thousands of people shopping and sight-seeing as a gentle breeze picked up, weaving between the tightly packed buildings and homes.
"STOP THAT RUNAWAY!!" the guards called from behind me. I took a deep breath and submerged myself in the crowd, heading in the direction of the west gate. Beyond, I knew, lay miles upon miles of crops and tall grasses. I could loose them if I could just escape the city. You can do it! What if they've closed the gate?! We jump it! Ok, you've officially lost it. Maybe we should take a moment to stop, catch our breath, and come up with a more reliable pla- NOPE! LETS GO! GAH!! I HATE IT WHEN YOU GET FILLED WITH DETERMINATION!!! TOO BAD!!
I began slowly making my way through the thousands of people gathered in the street. Just behind me I heard the guards reach the exit of the tunnel. " THE RUNAWAY MUST BE IN THE CROWDS!! COME ON MEN; SPLIT UP AND SEARCH!!" Sucking in a breath, I hunkered down and began to gradually make my way to the gate. Why do we have to be tall?! Hey! Worrying about stuff is MY job! I'm not worried, just stressed because height makes this a thousand times harder! You are extremely annoying right now. Shush and let me focus!
A guard pushed past me, shoving me to the dusty cobalt in his haste. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! THESE GUYS MUST BE BLIND!! THAT WAS RUDE!! I picked myself up and continued along the street. The gate came into view just as the head guard caught sight of me from across the street. "THERE!! DON'T LET THE RUNAWAY GET OUT!!" Suddenly two guards were pushing through the crowds as a third reached for me. I dodged his grip, feeling the wind from his hand as it barely missed my hood. Sprinting toward the gate, I heard the telltale sound of it closing.
People around me covered their ears at the screech as I finally escaped the crowds' grip. Sweat dripped on my face and down my back as I neared the exit. JUST A LITTLE FARTHER... Well look who's all caught up in the great escape... SHUSH WE'RE SO CLOSE I CAN TASTE IT!! I dove forward as the gate neared it's final destination and felt the rusted iron barely scrape my legs as I slipped through. We... We actually did it... We made it out of town and away from-WOOHOOO YEAH I FEEL AMAZING!!
I allowed relief and a brief rest to catch my breath before dashing into the wheat and into freedom.
~One hour later~
I sat on a hill and watched as the sun made it's lazy decent behind the jungle oaks in the distance. Leaning back I felt the soft grass beneath my back, the breeze washing over me and making the wheat gently tickle my hands. I breathed in the crisp summer air, the scent mingling with the fields of wheat and other crops around me. As I soaked in the sun's last dying rays, I relaxed, happy to have my new life. How did we ever live before this? I don't know, but I'm just happy to be away from there... Me too, me too...
The minutes crept by as I relaxed in the wheat, closing my eyes and never wanting to leave that spot. The light faded and I felt something small land on my nose. Opening my eyes in surprise, I saw a small light with a faint yellow hue glowing softly from the tail end of a bug. I sat up and watched as more rose around me, dancing in the clear night sky. One by one, the stars came out to bathe the fields in their soothing light. So, this is what peace is... I... Love it... It's wonderful... Let's never leave. Yeah. I lay back down and drifted off to sleep.
