The freshly fallen snow crunched underfoot as I made my way along the frozen river. Icicles dangled precariously from the limbs of trees, sunlight glinting off their shimmering surfaces. I was surrounded by silence, and though some might have found it eerie, I found it soothing. I let it gently wrap around me as I walked, enjoying myself. The fresh morning air was still and refreshing after the stuffy cabin I had stayed in. Thank goodness the blizzard finally stopped. I can't believe I was snowed in on my first day up here!
All of a sudden, a young rabbit appeared to my right. It took a tentative step out of the bramble thicket concealing it as I froze, not wanting to scare it away. Sensing no threat, the white ball of fluff began scavenging for stray berries that had survived through the night. I crouched down as quietly as possible, taking a handful of blueberries out of my jacket pocket. Sprinkling them as far away from me as I could without making too much noise, I held my breath.
The rabbit cautiously crept toward me and the berries, his eyes never leaving mine. He craned his head forward and snatched a berry, scrambling back a few paces before devouring it hungrily. I let out a silent breath and felt something small and wet land on my nose. Looking up, I saw more clouds had gathered. The rabbit ran back into hiding as I stood and turned to head back in the direction of the cabin. I shivered and clutched my jacket, leaving the berries to the rabbit.
The flakes began to fall again as I made my way back. Stretching my tongue out, I caught one and let the ice melt and make its way down my throat. Suddenly I tripped, falling face first into the snow. Groaning, I examined myself for injuries. There isn't anything serious, though my nose will be a bit sore tomorrow. I looked over to see that I had tripped over a root hidden in the snow. I began to stand before hearing rustling in some bushes a few meters away.
Freezing, I turned my attention to the bushes. A wolf peered out at me, looking me over. Not daring to move, I dropped my gaze as a sign of submission. If he decides I'm a threat he needs to put in place, I am in some serious trouble. The wolf turned and leaped in the direction he came from, leaving me in the snow. I cautiously rose and, seeing he hadn't doubled back, ran to my cabin. Catching my breath, I set a fire in the hearth and began roasting some marshmallows I had brought with me.
The room was soon filled with the tantalizing scent of s'mores and the sound of the fire crackling. I relaxed as I ate, watching as the wind picked up and swirled the icy flakes through the air. I'm so happy I came here. Winter wouldn't be the same without snow. Turning away, I let the fire begin to die and lay in bed. The wind howled outside, but the noise was comforting and I was soon lulled to sleep.A/N I <3 white winters :3
