I stood next to him as we stared at the edge of a cliff, the bottom nowhere in sight. It's face stretched on, the grey rock a flat plain crisscrossed by thousands of lines that had gathered over time. Tonight we would become a part of those lines, our choice linked to those of the people who had come before us and those who would soon join us in the glittering abyss.
I turned back to Jimin and our eyes met. Looking back at the sparse shrubs and stones that dotted the surrounding landscape, I realized that this would be the last time I saw the place where I'd spent my whole life. I stared at my feet, butterflies flooding my stomach. Jimin, noticing my nerves, engulfed me in a warm hug. "It's okay Y/N," he whispered. I felt tears well up in my eyes, thinking about my family.
"I'm scared," I confessed, holding him close. "This is something I've waited my whole life for, and yet now that the time has come I can only think of the life I'm leaving behind." The tears began to run down my face, leaving warm, wet streaks. He held my shoulders and I stared at him, his chocolate eyes glowing with starlight. "You don't have to worry, I'll be with you. In a few years we'll be back and we can start a new life together! I don't know what will happen once we jump, but I know that as long as I'm with you I'll be okay. Trust me, Y/N," he said with a grin.
Taking a deep breath, I calmed my heart and gave him a small smile in return. I held his hand tightly in mine as we turned back to the cliff, bracing for the leap. Together we swung our arms back and then forward, using the momentum to propel us off of the cliff and into the shimmering stars. Instead of falling, as I had expected, we were carried away by a gentle, unseen force. My hair flew gently along behind me as we floated through the empty air, hands clenched tightly. Stars slowly passed us by as we travelled, beautiful and unlike anything I had ever seen.
I gazed around in wonder, glancing at Jimin from the corner of my eye. He looked tense, his eyes darting around as if he expected someone to attack us. I squeezed his hand in reassurance and he whipped his head to face me, fear showing in his gaze. I gave him a soft smile, and although I couldn't speak he seemed to understand. He swallowed and nodded, starting to relax. Certain he was okay, I turned away to watch the celestial bodies pass us by. They were beautiful, with shining lights and explosions of color unlike anything I had ever seen.
Awe was the only word I could use to come close to describing the indescribable experience; everything around me was absolutely marvelous. Supernovas glittered, competing with the comets for our attention. Stardust gathered around us as we floated, enjoying the comfort and company of each other. Our eyes met as the golden sparkles surrounded us, playfully swirling and dancing.
I had somehow never realized how beautiful Jimin was before, both inside and out. His soul shone with the stardust as he smiled, eyes closed in bliss. Grinning at him, I squeezed his hand again as we floated away, the stars our guide through the universe.
