Logan

Ah... another beautiful morning... the sun's high up in the sky, sounds of birds chirping... wait... Oh shit. High up in the sky?

I turned around and looked at my bedside clock, 11:00 ! Losing my balance, I fell onto the ground, butt first.

Getting up and rubbing my sore behind, I quickly grabbed a t-shirt jeans and a beanie, no time for even brushing my hair. Grabbing a pack of gum and my books off the table, I rushed downstairs, one sock still dangling from my hand.

'MOM! MOM!' I called out, that was weird, usually if I wasn't up by 730, she would be banging on my door and making a purposefully noisy ruckus in the kitchen, then I remembered, she wasn't coming back till late tonight. Something about meeting old friends I think.

Slipping on my well-worn converses, I ran out the door. It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes if I manage to get a taxi.

40 minutes later, I arrived panting at the school gates. The guard gave me a questioning look, but didn't stop me.

'Never. In all my years here, have I ever seen a student arrive so late to school. I don't know whether I should be mad that you're this late, or happy that you decided not to skip school completely. Explain yourself, Mr. Pike.' The school secretary, a strict lady in her late 40s said.

'Well... my mother is out of town, and my alarm must have broke... and so I accidentally slept in. I would have arrived sooner, if I had taken a taxi, but I realized I didn't grab my wallet, so I had to run all the way...' my voice slowly becoming a whisper as I realized how feeble and predictable my story was.

'Well Mr. Pike, seeing as this is your second day here, I'll let you off with a warning. Bear in mind this is not a regular high school Mr. Pike, but is one of the best schools here. We do not appreciate tardiness here at James Ruse. You may now leave Mr. Pike, but this will be your first and final warning. Next time, it will be a detention or worse. Now, move along.' and she turned back to her computer, typing away.

Exiting the school office, I slowly walked along the corridors, class was almost finished and it was pointless to go there now. I decided to just wait in the cafeteria.

Sitting by yourself in an empty cafeteria, with empty benches surrounding you and the lack of the usual clatter really is a strange feeling. Kind of like being in airport without anyone in it.

Clutching my lunch tray with tight hands I looked at the scene in front of me, hundreds of students sitting on benches, eating, chatting having a jolly good old time. The cafeteria wasn't even near full, there were a ton of empty seats around. Seeing one just in front of me, I walked forwards to place my tray down...

'Sorry that seats taken,' a girl said with a fake smile.

'No... no worries.' I said with a small stutter, and moved to the next bench. The guy next to the empty seat gave me one glance and immediately put his bag onto the seat.

I sighed, giving up, heading for the bench in the far corner. Placing my books on the chair next to me, I grabbed a fry and placed it in my mouth. Wishing for some company.
But sometimes, loneliness was better than company, especially their company...

'Yo! Yo Logan!' A voice brought me away from my memories, I looked up and saw Matthew racing towards me.

'Never though you were the rebel type. Good one skipping school! But...' he looked around 'why are you here now? Kinda pointless, only skipping half a day of school...'

Wyatt sat down next to me and said, 'I though you were sick, I waited for around 5 minutes but you never came out, so I just left.'

I instantly felt bad, he had been waiting for me? 'No no, I wasn't sick, just my alarm broke and my mother is out of town... so i accidentally slept in...'
