It was past midnight. The entire village was plunged into complete darkness. Owls hooted at the dark of the night, glorifying the dim ray of light the moon provided. Wolves howled, forcing the night to be theirs and theirs only. At the village, everyone was asleep, the bakery stopped baking and the oven was ice cold, the ruckus made nearby the fountain was now gone. The wind swept away any remnants of the market place that was set up a few hours ago. Stray dogs fought over the remains of some old bones.
But...from a small window of a high house a candle was still lighted, all their neighbours were in their deep slumber but the Parkers were not yet asleep... Something had happened to their beloved daughter...to their beloved Eliza. She was known as the pearl of the village and was now in an unrecognisable state, she screamed at the top of her lungs trying to free herself from her biddings
"Hang on Eliza, I beg of you! Hang on!" Said the woman tightly holding onto her daughter's hand.
"Please don't let go!" The mother was as helpless as she could possibly be, she was witnessing her beloved daughter's life slipping right in front of her own eyes. Her heart ached, but no one heard her. It was too late. All the villagers were asleep.
"Eliza, my beloved, hang on! Hang on!" Screeched the mother, her voice was ripping the twilight.
"BLOOD" declaimed the daughter the word came as though she was in thirst for life, the word echoed within the small chamber, the word made her mother quiver. The word pointed out her anguish. Her angst. Her desire. Her envy. Her greed.
"BLOOD" she repeated in the same pleading shriek, she was wailing, twisting in her bed with agony.
They had attached her wrists upon the order of the High Priest, who came from time to time to perform an exorcism upon the young girl, he splashed her with holy water, but Eliza was still inhabited by demons, he dub her uncurable.
Eliza moaned, she grinded her teeth, the walls echoed with her pain, nothing was now real but her pain.
"BLOOD! BLOOD! BLOOD! BLOOD!" She endlessly repeated the same very word, she inhaled and exhaled her wish for this substance that would quench her thirst. She begged for it. Her eyes were bloodshed red, they moved in straight lines from left to right as though they were seeking something. Her lips were cracked all over. Her skin was so pale it merged with her white bedsheets. Her beauty once envied by all was now but just a vestige. Something gone without any trace.
"Please Eliza, Marc went to get the High Priest, please, please, please endure it!" Said the mother wiping away her daughter's forehead. Her own tears fell upon her daughter's visage, but it did not stop the girl from moaning in agony.
The woman looked over at the man who helplessly looked back at her, he was desperately trying to dry his eyes, he circled the room with his hands over his mouth, he walked faster, sobbing even louder.
"Mother!" Yelled a little boy while coming into the room.
"Mother! " he repeated trying to catch his breath "he..-he sent me away" he said resting his hands on his knees.
"Away?!" Exclaimed the woman" h-how could he?" The woman fell down to her knees, the voice she was trying not to listen to became clearer, it grew louder and louder.
"BLOOD! BLOOD! BLOOD!"
The mother's head was bursting with this echo, she buried it on the bed, hoping the sound will stop. She raised her head and looked at her daughter who was helplessly trying to break free. Her desperation was far too great... How could she help her daughter? How could she lessen her pain? Deem her agony?
"I'll do it" said the man in a whisper, he ran over to the cupboard, with shaking hands he opened the drawer.
"I'll do it" he repeated louder.
His hands searched the drawer, he then suddenly stopped. He had found what he needed...
"I'll do it!" He repeated again almost screaming out the words.
The man walked towards his daughter's bed, the mother whose head was buried into the mattress did not look up.
"I'LL DO IT" he spat out, pulling the trigger of his small family gun.
"Father, NO!" Begged the little child gripping onto his fathers legs.
"Father! We coul- We could call him! He surely would know what- to do!" Begged the child
"Him?" Muttered the father "what good would Satan's spawn bring us?! LOOK MARC! LOOK AT YOUR SISTER!" Yelled the man uncontrollably, he threw his hands in the air, the sound of his daughter's shrieks was unbearable. He would that he was six feet underground. He would that he could no longer breath. He would he was no more.
"Call him" said the mother her head still down on the mattress.
No one budged, Marc was too startled to move. The father couldn't have heard her over the shrieks of his daughter.
"CALL HIM!" she yelled raising her head, revealing her tears of blood. At the sight of her eyes Eliza shrieked even louder. She battled harder. She began smashing her own head to the bed's end. Repeatedly she begged, faster than before:
"BLOOD! BLOOD! BLOOD BLOOD! BLOOD! BLOOD !"
Upon witnessing such a dreadful sight the boy ran out of the room. The mother and father were trying to keep their daughter's head still. Eliza hissed at them. She aimlessly tried to bite off their flesh. She aimed at hurting her own parents, she was beyond any cure.
They maintained her for as long as they could. They spoke soft words. They begged. They pleaded. They prayed. But they waited. They waited with hope:"Move aside" said a voice from behind.
The parents startled dreadfully let go of their daughter, they saw the man approaching their daughter. They watched silently from the back while hugging one another. The man sat on the bed and reached out for his pocket.
"Shhh..." said the man bringing his hand on the girl's mouth.
Eliza watched the man with widened eyes. Eyes that begged for mercy. Eyes that begged to be put out of this current misery. Upon a frail second the man could have swore to have seen something humane in the way she looked. The glimpse was gone. She bit the man's wrist. Her teeth sinking deep into his flesh, making their way into his veins. She sucked upon the released blood as though her very life depended on this short instant. Both parent heaped upon the colomnious sight enrolling itself right before their eyes.
"Good, this should keep you quiet for some time" said the man leisurely smiling.
The girl's mouth was still attached to his wrist. She could not see him, all she thoughtwas simply the blood. She saw a dark figure leaning over her. She looked up and swallowed, she noticed his eyes. They were glaring at her. She looked into them. They reflected her current self; a carnivorous imp ripping off a man of his own blood. Upon realising how inhumane she looked the girl withdrew from her bite. Her mouth wide open she started sobbing. Her breath was still warm with the taste of blood. She hadn't realised that the man had injected her with a translucent liquid, nor did she notice her pale skin regaining its natural pinkish blush, nor did she realise that she could actually think, something she hadn't been able to do for such a long time.
What a beautiful man she thought.
She was ashamed of her very first thought, but she could not help to stare at the man, my saviour she kept on telling herself, she watched him. She lined his face with her eyes, she noticed his deep blue eyes, a colour she was incapable of disliking. Her eyes moved back and forth. She saw his golden blond locks enrolling themselves upon his shoulders, she looked at his lean and tall nose, she moved her eyes back to his eyes and noticed the long eyelashes he had, she focused on the deep blue colour, she felt lost, never had she ever set eyes upon such a rich tone of blue. His pupils moved to her direction, she immediately looked away, burying her mouth within her bed covers.
The man stood up, he calmy made his way out. Right before exiting he faced the parents.
"That would be 20 shillings" he said smiling before completely disappearing.
