Disgusting

Humans were disgusting, they were impulsive, devoid of reason, their thoughts only concerned themselves and how they felt. Matt's wings ruffled at the very thought as he looked down upon them, watching them destroy each other, the world they lived in, it was repulsive. He was lucky enough to be what he was and not some sort of fleshy rule-driven robot, he was a demon, he was the one to take the lives of those who'd done wrong. Humans make it seem like demons are the villains but the real villain is themselves, they blame demons for possessing their loved ones, they blame demons for taking away family, but they never consider that demons can see their sins. Matt was the last demon to have a sin counter, which resided on the heads of almost every human being in the world, some have 5 or 6 sins which would mean that they were reaching the limit. Those who have more than 20 sins are to be taken away, forgotten, forced to repent for their mistakes by letting themselves go.

"It's a thankless job, but somebody's got to do it!" Matt sang, chuckling at the end.

Matt always told himself that one day another demon will have a sin counter, one who could join him in taking the lives of the wicked, but it's been decades and the loneliness was prominent. The only other friend Matt had was a demon named Mark, a former sinner, who took it upon himself to claw his way out of death and become a demon. He was a quiet man with black hair, or it used to be, and he was very built for a short guy. Even then, he wasn't that short! He was a softy, but he didn't hesitate to take a sinner to the grave if it meant reducing the number of humans. In reality, demons were the ones saving the world while the Angels were trying to destroy it, they forgive too easily and protect sinners because they're just as soft as Mark. Humans weren't the only thing that disgusted Matt, but it was a dog eat dog world.

"We got a live one, he's at that stupid coffee shop." Mark announced, flying next to Matt.

"How many sins? Can't see it from here." Matt replied, lying through his teeth.

"I know that's a lie, go on!" Mark chuckled, willing to get a laugh out of anything.

Reluctantly, Matt dropped from the clouds and fell from the sky. The wind rushed passed him and made his ears ring and pop, slowly his black wings spread out until he looked like some sort of falling angel. Of course, regular humans couldn't see him unless he let them. His body twisted so he was facing the ground and suddenly he was flying at a blazing speed towards town, the wind following him and surprising unsuspecting mundanes. Matt chuckled and glided into an alleyway where he could show himself and conceal his wings, stepping into the light of the sun and the bustling streets teeming with people. He would've thought it beautiful if his eyes weren't tainted by the sins they bore. Matt saw the coffee shop just a ways down the street and thankfully nobody noticed him, so he walked down the street with no problem. Until he saw her.

"Mama, why are we going to a therapist?" The little girl asked.

"Because we need to talk to him about a few things." The mother gave a short answer, the tiniest ounce of fear in her voice.

Beth Thomas, 8 years old, a total of 45 sins.

Matt hated these rare cases, he had nothing against children but there have been a few times where he'd taken a child. It killed him, but he kept walking, hoping that she'd one day repent for her sins. The coffee shop was only little ways away now and Matt noticed someone staring at him, his eyes trained on his back, blinking but not showing any surprise. Matt grew weary of him as he entered the coffee shop in search of the sinner, who resided by the window sipping a cup of black coffee.

"Sean McLoughlin?" Matt asked, watching the green-haired male look at him.

"Yeah, do I know you?" He sounded confused, scared even.

"It's time for you to repent," Matt hesitated, he didn't want to do this. "I'm sorry."

Sean didn't show any signs of being surprised or angry, he looked sad and Matt couldn't only imagine how he felt. He stood up and took one last sip from his coffee, nodding to Matt and following him out of the shop and to the alleyway. They stood in front of each other with sullen looks, Matt revealed his wings and watched Sean's eyes fill with tears, regret showing on his face. A dark aura enveloped Matt's hand as he placed it on Sean's chest, hearing his heartbeat, feeling his lungs contract to stop himself from sobbing, but the tears were already streaming down his face.

"Sean McLoughlin, with a total of 30 sins, do you repent?" Matt asked, his eyes turning black and showing neon green pupils.

"I-I..." Sean was at a loss for words.

Unfortunately, he shook his head and smiled. He thought he deserved this fate, that he wasn't worthy of living with all the things that he's done to hurt people, and Matt had no choice but to honor his request.

"Very well, I am sorry." Matt said, watching Sean closely.

"Don't be, I did this, it's fine." Sean whimpered, still smiling.

His breath hitches and his blue eyes rolled back, his soul had been taken, his body was turning to dust, but he was still smiling when he finally disappeared with the wind. Matt sighed as his eyes returned to normal but that's when he saw him, the same person who'd been staring at him as he entered the coffee shop, he was glaring at him with tears in his eyes and it looked like he was about to charge at him. Matt was surprised and impressed, it seemed that this human could see him even when his wings were hidden.

"You... you son of a bitch..." He heaved shaky breaths.

"Nice to meet you, too." Matt replied, hands shaking.

"How could you...? Why?" His brown eyes shined with rage.

"You don't know anything, do you?" Matt asked, stepping closer.

The other man took a step back as Matt got closer, looking at the sin counter above his head and surprised to see only 1 sin.

"I bet you were taught that demons were evil, that angels were heroes, but it's all a lie," Matt sighed and relaxed his wings, "demons kill those who sin, angels are too forgiving, humans are the real villains."

Nathan Sharp, 27 years old, a total of 1 sin.

Nathan seemed to consider this and Matt knew he had him, curiosity was eating away at him and he wondered what his sin was. He was clearly a tight-laced kind of guy, never did anything bad in his life, but this seemed to be the only bad thing. But what was it?

"But I have a question," Matt narrowed his gaze onto him as he spoke, "why do you care so much for this human?"

"Why don't you? You're trying to help us, aren't you?" Nathan's voice was desperate, taking off his glasses to clean them.

"I do not feel for those who sin, but I knew of his intentions." Matt confessed, stepping closer to Nathan.

"Then why would you...?" Nathan was startled when Matt placed a hand on his shoulder.

"I would let them go if I could, but I do wonder..." Matt's hand traveled from Nate's shoulder to his face.

Nathan noticed his eyes change color, black and green, wide open with sudden interest. His smile disappeared as his gaze intensified to some sort of glare, but there was no sense of hate in his glowing eyes.

"What is your sin?" He asked, his gaze drawing him closer.

"Falling for you..." Nathan answered without hesitation or embarrassment.

Matt smiled and wrapped his wings around the both of them, shielding them from anyone who happened to enter the alley.

"It is your greatest sin, my love." Matt replied, huskily.
