"Remember how I said I could pretend?"
During the day the animatronics preformed normally, singing, dancing, it was all so cheerful that Nathan often forgot how they acted during the night. Especially Circus Baby, the only one that actually spoke to him during his shift as a night guard. Kids ran in and out of each room at least ten times before Nathan noticed the Private Room door open slightly, a chilling wind quickly engulfing the building and causing many children to shiver in confusion. Regardless, they ignored the odd chill much like other rules in the building and continued playing together in groups, Nathan locked onto the Private Room door and watched it close.
"There were 2, then 3, then 2, then 4, then 3, then 5, then 2."
As a night guard, it was Nathan's responsibility to make sure that the animatronics stayed in their place. Repairing them was also a minor part of his job, but what really bothered him was how he got them back on their stage. There was a red button he had to push to administer a controlled shock, which then carried over to the animatronics and once it was over they'd be back on stage. Guilt crawled up his back every time he was forced to do it, but he never knew what the consequences for sympathy would be in the future.
"I like to sing, dance, pretend, and..."
Matthew, the one who worked with Nathan during the day, had been sneaking around Ballora Gallery when he heard her music. He stopped, waiting for it to fade until he sensed a presence directly behind him. The only reason he was still in the building was because he wanted to make sure that the power was functioning properly, but the manager had told him not to rush into Ballora Gallery.
"What are you still doing here?" Nathan whispered urgently."I like to have fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun!"
The next morning was their day off but they didn't exit the building until the sun eventually peaked over the mountains, only then did they walk out the front doors clinging to each other in exhaustion. It probably looked like they were mildly intoxicated, but regardless of alcohol or anything else something just wasn't right.
"I told you... not to..." Nathan grunted.
"Ballora isn't... they're not..."
Matthew said, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry—I didn't mean for you to..."
Matthew's house was around the corner and relief crashed down on him, thankfully his roommate was out of town for a few months which gave him permission to do whatever he wanted. Once inside he carefully laid Nathan onto the couch and went get ice and some disinfectant, slowly realizing what had happened last night."Why didn't you trust me?"
Nathan looked himself over in the mirror, seeing the bleeding scratches down his left cheek. His side throbbed in pain and he lifted up his blue button up shirt, revealing a large gash deep enough to bleed but not to scar. He cursed himself and Matthew for thinking that these parasites could feel remorse, as if they were actually as human as they let on.
"Nathan I..." Matthew stopped and stared.
"It's fine. I'm okay." Nathan offered a smile.
Matthew didn't return the smile and gestured for Nathan to sit back on the couch, he wanted to get it over with as fast as he could before things got worse. It was all his fault, if he hadn't tried to reason with Ballora it probably would've gone a lot better. Nathan sensed Matthew's woe and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"It's okay, I promise." Nathan soothed.
"But it's not," Matthew said, "I did this, you got hurt because of me."
Nathan said, "I'm alive, aren't I?"
Matthew sucked in a breath when Nathan pulled him closer, ignoring the pain in his side when he wrapped his arms around Matthew."I will find a way out..."
A few days later, Matthew was switched to the night shift while Nathan was now day shift. He watched the Private Room door and let out a breath, the room was always locked with a passcode. Only the manager knew but he failed to enclose such information, drunk off the success of his creations. Then there was Matthew, sweet and kind Matthew, alone in the darkness of a world that had nothing to do with him yet he never quit. Sulking in worry, Nathan wondered if he'd get in trouble for joining the theorist during the night shift, it's not like the hand-unit even picked up on who entered, the messages were prerecorded. He didn't want Matthew getting hurt at all, he was too innocent and nice, he'd been through a lot these past few days.
"Something happened when there was one..."
Hiding under the desk in Circus Baby Auditorium, Matthew squeaked in fear when the door was slowly sliding open. He gripped the edge and pulled it back with great force, tears leaking from his scared eyes as a robotic giggle echoed in the room. There was a crash and the sound of scattering feet as someone stepped into the room, grunting in frustration before everything was silent once again.
"Matthew, are you here?" Nathan whispered.
"Nate?" Matthew whispered back?
He threw open the door and crawled out from under the desk, surprised and overjoyed to see Nathan. Then like a bolt of lightning he launched himself at the ebony and grabbed his shirt, shock and anger making his heart race.
"You're not suppose to be here!" Matthew cried. "Last time you got hurt!"
"I'm not leaving you, not now!" Nathan gripped Matthew's wrists.
Matthew sputtered, "That's the point! It's not about me!"
Nathan blinked before shoving Matthew against the wall and holding him there, the theorist struggling in horror of what might be next. He felt the musician's eyes on him and he shivered, more tears sliding down his face as Nathan moved closer to him.
"It's about us, y'hear me?" Nathan breathed. "We have to leave now.""There was screaming for a moment, but only for a moment!"
The adrenaline from hours prior coursed through them as they discarded their clothing, pinning each other back and forth and connecting their lips. Once they had gotten back to Matthew's house everything seemed easier, they didn't have to deal with Circus Baby, Funtime Foxy, Ballora, or Funtime Freddy. In his heart, Matthew felt a jolt of electricity when Nathan placed his lips onto his neck, tracing his fingers over his skin gently. Oddly enough, Matthew was extremely sensitive to touch and the fact that it was Nathan made him let out various lewd noises.
"Matty..." Nathan breathed, reaching down further.
The house was dark and heat radiated off of them, Matthew moaned and gasped as Nathan traced his tongue over his cheek."There's something bad inside of me..."
The next day was a work day, but neither Matthew nor Nathan got up to greet the morning. Wordlessly, they quit their job and never returned.
