When Matt first landed in a bed of golden flowers, he never expected that he would be the one to save a bunch of monsters. His family had taught him that monsters were elegant and kind creatures, unlike humans who proved that they didn't need a soul. He climbed Mt. Ebott in one day and had planned to study the hole, only to trip on an overgrown root and plummet into a sea of darkness. Matt had made so many new friends, Toriel, Sans, Papyrus, Mettaton, Alphys, Asgore, he even considered Flowey to be a valuable friend. His Determination had gotten him this far, what was stopping him now?

He couldn't move his body...

He couldn't reach his SAVE FILE...

Nate was going to kill him...

Matt watched the ebony, who had once been a flower, now hover in front of him with threatening eyes. Under his eyes were two streaks of purple, his teeth had sharpened, and he had wings with black and white feathers. He looked angry and evil, but despite his intentions, Matt had never seen someone so beautiful. Someone whispered to Matt in his mind, a slight buzz from the back of his head, and he listened carefully to the words that were being spoken.

But with what little powers you have left... you can SAVE something else?

Matt knew his friends were in their somewhere, deep within Nathan's soul, and his Determination allowed him to get even closer than before. In the end, it could hardly be called a battle because everyone was safe. Except...

Matt... save him... please...

Finding his voice, almost always unused, Matt called out to Nathan and watched as his eyes widened. His powers were gone and all that remained was an ache in his chest, which made him lower his hands in defeat. But he wouldn't stop.

"NO! I DON'T NEED ANYONE!"

"STOP IT! STOP IT, HUNTER!"

"JUST LET ME WIN!"

A blinding flash of colorful light engulfed Matt in a sea of white, his eyes closed as images flashed before him. A boy falling into a bed of golden flowers, a monster child helping him through a cave, and finally both of them holding bouquets of golden flowers; they were both smiling. But the boy who had fallen wasn't Matt. More images flashed, Nathan crying and holding the boy's limp body, Nathan becoming a hyper God of death and being attacked, and finally Nathan's body was turned to dust. A flower that grew before all the others. Flowey. Matt started to weep silently, not out of pain from his injuries but out of sadness. The future had already been taken from them by humans, Asgore lost his wife and child, why did everyone have to be so cruel? In the sea of white, Matt heard the distance sound of crying coming from somewhere far away. He tried to move but his body was sore, then he realized he was laying on his stomach in the dirt, but the air was lighter. Pushing himself to stand, Matt marveled at the golden flowers blooming at a fast speed as well as the golden petals swirling in the breeze.

In a particular patch of flowers stood Nathan.

He was back to his regular monster form, wearing a black button up shirt and jeans. He covered his eyes with his arm as thick tears landed on the grass beneath him, hiccups of fear and sadness tearing through him. Matt limped towards him and considered tapping his shoulder but hesitated, knowing the poor boy was in a fragile state.
"I-I'm sorry," he wept. "I'm so... so sorry...!"
Matt was astonished. Nathan had nothing to be sorry for, he just wanted to see his friend, his brother. But he let the monster speak.
"I-I didn't mean... to-to hurt anyone...!" He whined.
Finally, Matt wrapped his arms around Nathan and smiled when the ebony slowly hugged back. There was a long period of silence before the monster nuzzled further into the embrace, chuckling sadly and speaking softly.
"Heh... I don't wanna let go." Nathan whispered.
Matt ended the hug and offered a smile, watching Nathan smile back but frown soon after. Their hands were entwined with each other, showing no signs of letting go. Nathan took in Matt's appearance, lingering on his chocolate brown eyes and childlike features. It felt like they've known each other for years.

"I know. You're not really Hunter, are you?" Nathan sighed. "Hunter's been gone for a long time."
Matt nodded and felt his ear twitch, as if someone was breathing next to his shoulder. In fact, there was, and Nathan couldn't see him. This spirit, this boy, was biting his lip with a pained expression at the very sight of the ebony. Matt hid his shock.
"What... is your name?" Nathan asked.
"My name is Matt." Matt answered, still smiling.

Nate... I'm sorry...

"My time is running out, Matt." Nathan explained. "I can destroy the barrier, but I'll turn back into a flower soon after."
But, just then, another soul appeared. It was empty, no Determination, nothing. A vessel.

Nathan... goodbye...

The presence behind Matt was gone, Nathan stared at the empty soul before taking it into his hands. He stared at it and smiled.

"Well, Matt, looks like I'll be staying!" Nathan smiled.

Without hesitation this time, Matt hugged Nathan and kissed him on the cheek.
