The cooling breeze from outside flowed gently into my room. The lace curtains surrounding the window flapped in the gust as if they were dancing to their own tune in which nobody could understand. I sat on the comforter that stood at the base of the window and stare into the night sky.
I did this every night.
Staring out into the night of our small London town, I could take a moment and feel like a part of the city once more. The chatter of teenagers like me gossiping about the new girl in our history class, the soft loving whispers of couples walking down the street, and even the hums of mothers singing their little children to sleep seemed to be as soothing at the breeze itself. Magical.
I decided it was time to turn in when my grandfather clock chimed at 10:30. Mother usually wanted me in bed and asleep no later than 10, but I simply can never resist taking in every breath taking moment. I walked to bed, my nightgown flowing just like the curtains. I climbed in and pulled the blue, silk covers overtop of me. I smiled, shutting my eyes to escape to a dream world. In minutes, I fell asleep.
“Crystal.” I opened my eyes to see who was speaking my name, but to no surprise, there wasn’t anyone there. This has happened every night for a week, and I can’t understand why. Who would be calling my name in the middle of the night? The thought frightened me to no end. I spoke to Mother about it, but she just smiles softly and says, “It’s just the wind.”
I lay back down and shut my eyes once more, trying to ignore the haunting whisper of my name being spoken over and over again. It didn’t seem to work. I turned over and pulled the covers over my ears so I wouldn’t be able to hear the ghost-like tone beckoning me.
For a moment or two, I was finally relaxed.
The breeze suddenly stopped, and I heard my windows close shut. My eyes flew open as I jolted upright and stared at the sealed shutters. This was something new… I almost screamed when I felt something large pounce onto my lap; but I looked down in relief to see my golden retriever, Mike, on me. I felt a sense of protection when he was here with me; he was basically my body guard. I scratched his ears.
“You scared me, boy; but I’m glad it’s just you.” Mike nuzzled his head under my chin and gave me a lick. I sighed and lie back down to shut my eyes once more.
“Crystal.”
I shook my head. No…no… you’re just a figment of my imagination. You’re not real. I tried to tell myself, but it wasn’t working out so well. My light blue orbs opened to meet the glowing, yellow eyes of a shadow. I began to scream when the figure put its hand on my mouth.
Let me explain… this is not just a person’s shadow. It’s just a shadow with yellow eyes! No pupils or anything… just glowing, eerie, yellow eyes that stared into my soul. I couldn’t think, I couldn’t blink, and I couldn’t even breathe. This wasn’t possible… I was just dreaming. Shadows can’t touch…they’re just…shadows…
“I need you to come with me.” A deep, horrifying voice arose from the figure. My eyes widened. Go where?!
“He needs you, Crystal.” The voice kept beckoning me, asking me to go with it. I was so confused! What was this thing?! Its eyes were the most horrifying thing in London at the moment.
“I need you to come now. He needs you now!” I kept shaking my head. None of this was even freaking POSSIBLE! I looked around for Mike; but he was nowhere to be found. I began to panic and started fidgeting.
“Hush.” The voice whispered quietly. I stopped moving and locked eyes with the creature. Though he had no pupils, I could tell he wasn’t kidding that I was seriously needed for something, and someone.
He grabbed my wrist as the shutters flew open and pulled me out of my warm, comfortable bed to the window. The shadow looked down at me and sneered, “Hold on tight.” I didn’t ask questions. I just hung on for dear life as we leapt off my window pane and flew through my open window into the foggy night.
The city looked stunning in the midst of fog and lights; but I could not enjoy it. As we got higher and higher into the sky, I became terrified of the height we were at and shut my eyes for comfort. Where was I going? Why was I needed? My final question scared me…
Who needed me; and why?
