 Summer Haze

Do you find it at all ironic,

That I can remember so vividly,

All that never happened?

Your velvety, dampened lips,

Meeting mine in a mutual smile,

So minty I can feel my tongue tingling,

Like a candy-cane soda pop.

The sweet saltiness of the skin at your collarbone,

Where the sweat beads into little droplets of ambrosia,

As my lips brush over your ticklish neck.

And the hours we'd spend under the sycamore tree,

Gazing upwards as the bashful, blushing sunset fades into an indigo map of the Universe,

The stars our blinking traffic lights as we traverse the sky from which we were born.

And how, despite the 90º heat and,

The humid mist stagnating in the air around us,

You still always offered me your coat,

Always shooed away the careless gnats and mosquitos,

That so often seemed to tangle themselves in my hair.

And how,

Despite the feverish summer warmth,

And the way the dewy grass sends a constant itch through my legs,

And the fact that none of it is real...

There is no other place I'd rather be,

Than, with you, curled under that sycamore tree.

Watching the sunset bleach the sky,

Until all of it fades from my mind's eye...
