Summer's Lesson
What did I do before?
The days seem to mash together.
Visit here, visit there.
See you!
Until the phone rang.
My mother answered.
Her voice trembled.
"See you."
She hung up.
"He's in the hospital."
She went ahead, then called home.
"He's stable, but he's asleep."
I arrived there later and heard your snores.
I left relieved and told you, "See you."
You were saved, but another was not.
That weekend we went to Vegas.
Upon arrival, slot machines greeted us.
Checked in and went to a show.
The next day we ate breakfast.
Then, we visited him.
His snores were struggling.
His breaths were gasps.
His body was swollen.
She couldn't say it, but...
It was only a matter of time.
We said, "See you," and left.
His sister, brother-in-law, and wife stayed.
Then, it was just his wife.
The phone rang later that day.
We found out he passed away.
We found out he waited for the right moment
For all that time
With his failing body.
We found out he used his last strength
To open his eyes
For his sister
For his brother-in-law
And finally, his wife
To make sure they knew
He said
Goodbye
And
See you.
