orientations and student meetings,

school supply lists,

lists of expenses.

daily schedules roll on out,

classes done and decided.

yearbook ordered,

extracurricular fee paid.

bus comes early,

a block down the street.

laptop charged,

pencils sharpened.

a sudden haze does

quickly descend.

it's still August!

summer isn't to end!

well then, my unnamed teacher,

if it's summer homework

you do assign,

I should have until the

equinox

to finish it,

should I not?
