As soon as I opened the front door, I raced to my room, hoping to escape my adoptive mother's barrel of questions that threatened to drown me everyday. Unfortunately, my luck seemed to run out today, as Melissa called out to me, "How was school today?"
And of course, at that precise moment, Cyprus walked in and hollered, "Aubrey got chocolate and spaghetti sauce all over her."Melissa gasped in horror so loud I could hear it from all the way on the second floor and I heard her feet pounding up the stairs. Heart racing, I ran to my room and slammed shut the door just as Melissa reached my door and started banging on it. "Aubrey, open the door at once!" she demanded, while I locked the door and sagged against it.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and I could hear Melissa giving up on me and walking away to answer the door. For a few minutes, the silence in the house was deafening. My room was just far enough from the front door for me to hear my breath and to hear the occasional murmur of conversation from Melissa and whoever was at the door.
Soon, I heard the front door bang shut, and Melissa hollered to me, "There are guests that want to see you, Aubrey."
I rolled my eyes and sighed before contemplating whether or not to go. Melissa hated to make a scene in front of others, and I knew I would get a huge scolding if I didn't go, but I honestly didn't care at the moment. I chose to flop on my bed and take out the library book I chose at random to read. To my surprise, it was titles: Spells, Antidotes, and Curses through the Ages.
Weird, I thought to myself, that I would choose a book like that. Unfortunately, Melissa, once again, was coming up the stairs to my room, and it was too late to switch a book.
"Aubrey!" Melissa entered the room, without bothering to knock. "Hurry up and come downstairs," the guests are saying that they are going to talk to you about some sort of weird spell thingy." Melissa scrunched up her face in confusion. I looked up as she said spell. "What a coincidence," I thought to myself. Aren't I reading a book about spells?
