I hover over the phone with a flighty hand, dreading the conversation that I'm about to instigate. Following a restless night, I'm now feeling terrible trepidation about calling Shawn to explain last night's events.
Things are just starting to become comfortably amicable between us. I would hate for this to ruin that and more importantly, giving Shawn ammunition to not be fully accepting of Jonny being so involved in the girls' lives.
My reluctant fingers pick up the receiver then carefully tap in his number. Swallowing hard, I wait for him to pick up.
"Hello," Shawn cheerfully answers.
"Hi, Shawn, it's only me," I cheerfully reply back, with dread dragging me down.
"Oh, hi, Jessica. Did the girls enjoy the charity gala?"
Thinking that I may as well get this over and done with, I sheepishly reply. "That's a yes . . . and a no," I admit with nervous butterflies flitting around in my stomach.
"How come?" Shawn's tone of voice instantly drops with worry.
"I thought it best that I call, to explain to you about something that happened last night," I apprehensively say, almost being able to feel Shawn's panic rising from down the line of the phone.
"What happened? Are the girls okay?" Shawn blurts out, sounding panicked.
Remembering Lissy's words from last night, the ones about Shawn going mental if he finds out about Denley, are certainly playing on my mind right now. Doubt surges through me, questioning my decision to tell Shawn the whole truth about what happened to Lissy.
I need to try and take control of the situation, before it really starts to get out of hand; getting Shawn to listen before flipping is my primary objective. "The girls are fine, Shawn . . . but something happened that I think you should know about."
"Okay." Shawn's tone dubiously deepens.
"Have you heard of Griffin Denley?" I ask, waiting for a response before continuing.
"Yeah, he's that dickhead actor who's always in the papers with a string of different women hanging off his arm every week. Why?" Shawn asks.
"That's him. Well, he and Jonny have history. He was at the charity gala last night, trying to wind Jonny up. Later on in the evening, Lissy and Lottie bumped into him, when they went to the toilet." I hesitate, reluctant to say the next part.
Shawn begins to get impatient with me. "Spit it out, Jessica. What happened?"
I nervously continue. "He was talking to the girls, more so to Lissy, when he touched her face and Erin Laurel . . ." I'm unable to finish my sentence, because Shawn is shouting down the phone at me.
"What did you just say? That fucking Denley bloke, touched Lissy?"
I fidget on the edge of the bed, preparing for the wrath of Shawn. "Yes, he did. Erin Laurelson saw it and went ballistic, which scared both the girls."
"Who the fuck is Erin Laurelson?" Shawn bites back.
"She's Jonny's former PA and Denley's girlfriend," I answer quickly, giving Shawn the information he needs in order to process what I'm telling him.
"Is that all that bastard did to Lissy?" he asks with angry, heavy breaths being clearly heard.
"Yes," I quietly reply, relieved that he's no longer shouting.
"So what now? What did the police say?" Shawn's asks, sounding less furious but more determined.
"That's what I needed to talk to you about actually . . . they weren't called, Shawn," I quietly tell him, with a strange feeling of culpability.
