Erin ended up staying with us after showing up at the apartment with her shocking news. We talked well into the night, until things began to make some kind of awful sense to her. Despite everything that had happened, I didn't want her having to spend that awful night alone. And as indifferent as both Jonny and I felt about Denley; we both knew that Erin needed us. She still wants to see the good in a man shrouded in so much bad all the time that he was alive, because she loves him. Although he's now dead, she still loves him. So offering her a shoulder to cry on, and a sympathetic ear was the very least that we could do for her.Somewhere in the muddy waters of Erin's life, I really do hope that she finds a small amount of respite from her tormenting grief, just enough for her to see a light at the end of a dark and very confusing tunnel. At the bitter end of the day, Erin is still carrying Griffin's baby. A baby that can give her something that he never could, love.
She has to hold onto that. Keep it close to her on the darkest of days, when she thinks she can't go on.
Can you console the inconsolable? Give hope in the middle of a hopeless situation?
I don't think you can.
I know I can't.
Not even Jonny can.
This is a grieving journey that Erin has to sadly make alone. She may have sympathetic company along the way, but ultimately, only she can find her safe destination.
For now, that destination is temporarily at her parents' house. She needed to escape London. The press. The radio. The television.
All of which are incessantly covering the death of Griffin Denley, hounding her for answers that she simply cannot give.
For it seems that Denley might have taken all of those answers to the grave with him. It's still unknown whether Griffin intended to kill himself or if it was purely an accident. From the evidence found at his house, the police know that he took a shit load of drugs; washed down with a shit load of alcohol. All of which, he did alone.
No one was with him during his self-destruct party, because that's the first thing that the police checked on Denley's CCTV. In fact, he'd been completely alone since coming back from the charity gala, and Erin was the last person he made contact with before his death. His post mortem will certify his cause of death, but it won't bring any comfort for Erin.
She still believes that the message he left her on the night that he died was his final apology, his final goodbye.
There's no doubt in her grieving mind that Griffin intended to kill himself, although there's been no note found as yet. So the speculation surrounding his death continues and the police are leaving no stone unturned.
Erin told us that the police also asked her about the injuries to his face, which is when she told them about the altercation between Griffin and Jonny. However, she played down the reason why the altercation took place. She said there had been an argument over a woman between herself and Denley and that Jonny had tried to diffuse the situation. However, Griffin then made an inappropriate comment about me, which caused Jonny to hit him because he was defending my honour. The police believed her but did come and talk to Jonny and myself. We backed up what Erin had told them and the three security men, backed up our version of events. When we asked Erin about her reasons for lying, she said it was to protect Lissy. She told us that she thought if the police knew the truth. They would start investigating further and question Lissy. Erin didn't want Lissy to go through that, so she lied. She not only lied to protect Lissy. She lied to protect her baby. She said she was going through enough heartache already, she couldn't cope with the police dissecting every aspect of Griffin's life as well.
