                                                                Chapter Eight

                                                      The Keepers of the Law

My foot continued tapping and twitching where I saw. I was convinced I was getting sick or feverish. But Jack assured me that I was just fine. Why did they want me? What could they possibly need? I looked over at Jack, who was flying the ship perfectly. I didn’t want to go. I really didn’t want to go. After everything they had put me through to make sure that I was a Twiad, I wasn’t exactly eager to ever see them again.

“It’ll be just fine,” Jack sighed.

I didn’t reply. I continued to tap my foot and pick at my nails.

Jack had told me that the Keepers once had a beautiful palace-like building, back before the tragedy had destroyed it. Now they met in what used to be a house, though now it looks elegant and modernized. Jack landed the ship and held his hand out for me to take it. I felt my stomach twist at the sight of the large white building with columns covered in ivy. It was intimidating to walk up those stone steps and knock on the thick wooden door. I saw a man peek out the sheer curtains before opening the door for us.

“Hello,” he greeted, his appearance reminding me of a realtor. “You must be Samantha Peters.”

     “Y-Yes,” I croaked.

His eyes went to Jack. “I wasn’t informed that she was going to have a guest with her.”

Jack’s eyes narrowed. “Who are you?”

"I’m Leon. I work for the Keepers.”

“Ah, so you’re their little secretary?”

Leon glared back at Jack, but then focused his attention back on me. “They are waiting in the sanctuary.”

Leon and Jack began having a glare-down. I tugged on Jack’s arm to keep him from lunging at him. “Come on. Let’s don’t make them wait,” I said to Jack nervously.

“Only Samantha can go in,” Leon announced, now stepping in front of us.

My eyes widened in surprise. They never mentioned it had to be only me. My heart rate picked up and my mouth felt dry. Each time I’ve had Jack at my side. I need him at my side.

Jack stepped forward, now towering over Leon with crimson eyes and clenched teeth. “Either I go in with her, or we leave,” he replied in a tone that made even my spine tingle.

I could see Leon’s hand tremble just the slightest bit. He took a step back and looked over at me. “The Keepers said—“

“I don’t care.” Jack’s calmness made him all the more intimidating. He looked like a wild cat about to spring on him. I would have stopped him if I weren’t so terrified to go in alone to face those chilling people.

“Jack,” a new voice said loudly.

I looked over to see one of the Keepers, Destin I believe, standing in the doorway of the huge wooden doors. His hair was snow white, just as I remembered, and his sunken in eyes were a shade of neutral green. He wore a white suit, similar to business men on earth, only it was fully white without any color. His looked was extremely intimidating because his expression was so cold.
