Yesterday was weird. I'm not really sure how I feel about it, I mean I'm happy me and Carl are ok again, but I'm also happy with Marcus. We aren't dating or anything, but he's really made me happy when I felt like I wouldn't feel like it again. Our date at that fancy restaurant is tomorrow, today I'm going out with Debbie to buy a nice dress. I texted her a couple of minutes ago to meet me at my house so we can take the bus to the mall. I finished up my thoughts and lastly decided to skip any makeup once I heard the knock on the door. I grabbed my money and phone and slid them both into my pocket, greeting Debbie with a smile.
"Ready?" I asked her. She nodded.
"You?" She asked in reply. I smiled and nodded as she had done.
I wasn't really sure if going on this date was the right thing for me. I know Carl and I were on good terms again, but I'm not sure if he realizes that I wasn't sure if we should be together as something more than friends. I wasn't sure if I was ready for that again. I think going out with Marcus would help me understand my feelings.
We made it to the mall and started to brainstorm places they would have any nice dresses. I didn't want to look totally Southside.
"Have any ideas?" Debbie asked me as we looked at the map of the building. I shrugged.
"We could just search around and browse, I mean we have all day to chose," I said.
"Yeah sure," Debbie said as she smiled. I felt my phone buzz in the back of my pocket and quickly removed it to see the text message from Marcus.Marcus:
If you have one, a white dress would match me ;)Ok, can't wait :)
I put my phone away and saw Debbie staring at my curiously.
"He said I should get a white dress," I clarified. She nodded her head, and we set off and decided to look for something for me to wear.
"Well, I think American Eagle would have the best selection," I said.
"Yeah, let's go there," Debbie said impatiently as she began to lead me by my wrist.
We browsed silently, each one of us holding up options and either nodding our head yes, or shaking it as in no. We finally decided on three different options and I went into the changing room to try them on. The first one I tried was actually a white romper, but soon decided against it since it didn't seem to fit the occasion. The next one I tried on had lace on the part that covered my top and the rest of the dress flowed down to my ankles. It was held up with straps on the shoulders, and I knew that this was the one to buy.
I changed back into my normal clothes and met Debbie outside, then proceeded to show her the one I chose and then went to the cash register.
"Your total will be sixty-four dollars and ninety-nine cents," the nice lady chimed. I gave her a hundred and she quickly gave me my change and receipt.
"Where do you get all your money?" Debbie asked.
"I took it out of my collage savings," I said with a shrug. She looked at me with wide eyes.
"You have a college savings account? Aren't you like 15?" She asked with a laugh. I smiled and shrugged.
"My parents made it for me," I said simply. She continued to look at me.
"You never talk about your parents, or why you moved here," she said slowly. I looked at her directly and made up my mind that it's time I told her.
"My parents died when I was in the sixth grade. They were traveling doctors and decided to take up an offer to go out of the country and help contain an outbreak, ironically they actually got sick with it."
Her expression didn't change but she quickly looked away from me and stared straight ahead.
"I'm sorry," she said quietly and squeezed my hand.
"It's okay, I'm not telling you this because I want you to feel bad for me," I said reassuringly. She looked at me again and smiled.
"Is that why you moved here?" She asked. I shook my head.
"No, we've been in and out of the system since they died, but I always do something to fuck everything up and make everyone who takes us in not want us. Our social worker tracked down Margaret, and we're staying with her until they find us a permanent home," I said with a sigh. I never liked the fact that this home I was staying in could be temporary, like all the others. But it felt different, it made me feel safe.
Debbie was about to say something else but a voice interrupted.
"Look, it's the tampon head and the cup of noodle," someone said and a group erupted in laughter. I looked over and scowled at the bleach blonde sight I recognized.
Holly.
"What do you want?" Debbie said disgustedly. She rolled her eyes and took another sip of her drink.
"What do you have here?" She said as she began to eye my shopping bag. Before I could react she reached her hand into the bag and pulled up my white dress. I pulled the bag and the dress away from her, and she laughed.
"It would be a shame if something happened to it," she said as she stepped closer and began to tip her cup over the bag. I quickly shoved the cup back towards her and I watched it as it fell out of her hand and onto the floor. It had spilled all over her shorts, legs and shoes before it hit the ground. She stood still with her mouth open and it seemed like everyone was too stunned to speak.
"You bitch!" She screamed at me. Debbie hurriedly started to head out of the mall with me being dragged behind her. As soon as we got passed the doors leading outside, we both bursted out in laughter.
