GiannaI sat on the couch watching some stupid reality tv show.
In my hands were bills and taxes that I dreaded getting.
All of them had things circled in red and threats from people. I looked at how much money I owed and not enough time to make it. Even if I worked overtime, it was still hard to pay these bills.
I sighed as I rubbed my temple and looked at everything I owed. What stood out was the rent of the apartment. The landlord had kept raising and raising the price and it was getting too hard to pay.
"Fuck." I quietly said as I looked at all these bills.
The only way I was going to pay these is if I got a second job. But that wouldn't give me any time with my kids if I did. This was all too complicated and confusing.
I looked towards the rooms that held my sleeping children. Blake and Max shared a room while Aspen got her own small room. I got another room next to theirs.
All of a sudden, my phone started to ring. The one thing I managed to pay off was the electrical and the phone bill. Without electricity we were fucked.
I didn't want my kids to live without electricity.
"Hello?" I said as I answered the phone. Immediately, I heard people talking in the background and music blasting through the phone.
"Hey Gea!" Harley called through the phone. Harley had been my best friend ever since I left my family. She had helped me through thick and thin.
"Hey Harls, you at a club?" I questioned her.
"Hell yeah I am! I'm here with Marlie and Valeri! Do you want to come, you know, girls night out?" She yelled through the phone. I could barely hear her because of how loud the music was.
I sighed as I thought about my kids.
"I can't Har, my kids are dead asleep. And besides, I don't have any money-"
"No money?" She questioned.
She must of realized I was talking about how the landlord was raising the rent and all the bills that piled up. I couldn't afford to go clubbing.
"Oh shit, I'm sorry Gianna. You know what, I'm going to come-"
"No, you can go clubbing with the girls. I don't want to be the reason you can't go," I told her through the phone. She sighed and I heard someone calling her name.
"Fine but your coming tomorrow night no questions asked!" She spoke and hung up. I sighed, knowing there was no changing my best friends mind.
I looked at the time, 12:01 p.m.
Feeling tired and stressed, I decided to go to sleep.
-----
A ringing sound woke me up from my deep sleep. I stirred awake as I reach for my phone. A name flashed on the screen:
Zack
Zack was our landlord for the apartment and also for the whole building as well. I picked up the phone knowing this wasn't good.
"Zack, it's three am? Why the hell are you calling me at this hour?" I questioned him.
"Gianna you know pretty damn well why I'm calling you. You haven't paid rent in three months! If you don't pay, I'm going to evict you by the end of the month!" He threatened through the phone.
Now, I was fully awake.
"I'm sorry I'm trying my best-"
"Your best isn't good enough, path it or I kick you out by the end of the month!" And just like that he hung up on me. Stress was eating me alive at this point.
I decided to figure out to do in the morning.
-----
The days went by so fast. Saturday came and I took my kids out to eat and to watch a movie. I knew I shouldn't of spent money, but I did it anyways.
Money was very tight in our house. But I barely took the kids out to eat.
Before I knew it, it was Saturday night and I went out with Harley, Valeri, and Marlie. I had gotten a neighbor to watch the kids.
Sunday had flown by and now Monday came around the corner. Since there weren't that many busses, the elementary and middle kids shared busses. Luckily for me, Blake had a key back to the apartment and would take his siblings back home. I would usually leave money for pizza or something in the fridge for them.
Working double shifts all week wasn't fun at all. Today was surprisingly crowded, even though it was a Monday. Today I was working as the cashier.
As I continued to take orders, I continued to work harder. Every time I would think of Zack and his threats, I pushed myself to work harder so he wouldn't kick us all out of the apartment.
"That will be 2 dollars for the coffee sir!" I told the customer as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a ten. He handed it to me.
"Keep the change." He mumbled as he left.
-------
Once I finished work, I changed out of my work clothes and into my street clothes. I tiredly held my purse as I got into my car and drove off. I had forgotten to get my paycheck from last week, so that was now in my purse too.
As I drove, I could barely keep my eyes open. I continued to drive though, blinking in and out of the real world. Everyone seemed like a haze.
When I snapped back into the real world, I had realized I was getting too close to another car.
"Shit!" I yelled but it was too late.
Crash
