When Artem got home, he parked the Land Cruiser in the garage and walked inside.
For a few seconds, he thought that perhaps he was having a flashback to when the FSB had left evidence of their presence at his house in Russia.
Unfortunately, this was not a flashback.
He stepped apprehensively into the kitchen, heart pounding.
There was a slip of paper sitting out on the kitchen counter. Artem crept forward, suspicious of everything in the situation, to read the paper.
Hello, Artem Takaryev. We helped ourselves to your potato chips, also, your boyfriend was kind enough to provide us with your location.
Artem swore in Russian. "Brilliant. Now I've got to spoof all my GPS locations, and probably stay somewhere else for the next week."
He left the note sitting exactly as he found it. If those goons returned, they needed to believe Artem hadn't been around at the house for days.
"Well, now it's just a game of chess for a while." Artem mumbled, half to himself. "Although, I'll admit that chess has never been my favorite game."
He turned, leaving the kitchen to retrieve his suitcase from the laundry room. He packed what he needed into it, then zipped it shut and put his phone into his pocket, not before spoofing his GPS.
Then, he called Everett, taking a minute or two to explain the situation.
Everett seemed to sit back and sigh. Artem bet he was shaking his head, too. "Well, son."
"Yes?" Artem asked.
"Quite a predicament you've got there." Everett continued. "Well, let me say this- your house, your car even- all of it could very well be bugged. So don't even get in your car. Go outside take your suitcase and anything else you need, and wait for me out in the cul-de-sac, alright? You can stay at my house."
Artem made a mental note to reimburse Everett for this someday. "Okay." He picked up his suitcase and one of Ravil's old jackets, then walked outside, rolling his suitcase along behind him.
"ETA ten minutes, that okay?" Everett asked.
"It's fine." Artem replied, standing by the mailbox.
