What did Seth say to Owen? What did Owen mean ‘I want this to end’? How does Seth know where Sammy lives? What did Pete pretend to do when ask me to close my eyes? Am I attracted to him too? I hope not, because that would ruin our friendship and that is something I don’t want to put on risk. Why do I like to complicate everything? I wish I could answer any of those questions, that would have made my life far less complicated, but life is anything but easy.
“Why are you lying there? You’re gonna get a sun burn.” Seth said in his usual friendly voice.
“My clothes are wet.” I said simply and with my eyes still closed. I was still a little mad at him.
“Look,” he started saying and sat next to me, “I know you’re upset, but you also know I only want the best for you.”
I looked at him, “Do you think Owen is not good enough for me?” He took a deep breath and looked away. “What did you say to him early?” I insisted, but he kept quiet. “I know you care about me, but you have no right to say anything to him.”
“I’m going to stop you right there.” He said in a more serious tone. “You’re like a sister to me, so I guess that gives me the right to look out for you.” He paused and looked right at me, I couldn’t stand his glare and I didn’t know what to say either. He was right and I felt so stupid for saying that to him. He blew out a little air and shook his head. “Do you really want to know what I said to him?”
“Yes.” I said quickly.
“I just asked him what his real intentions with you were. I also told him I wouldn’t like to see any of you get hurt.”
“That was all?” I asked suspicious. Seth nodded. That didn’t sound so bad, did it? Why was Owen so upset?
“Owen is my friend too, but I know you best. You’ll probably end up falling for him and who knows if this is only a game for him.”
“Hey! Who said I am going to fall for him?” I protested.
“Please, it only took one smile from Noah for you to fall madly in love with him.”
“What? That’s not true.” I said in a weird high pitched voice. He just narrowed his eyes. “I don’t want to fight over this. Just promise me you won’t say anything to him again.”
“Fine. I’ll stay out of your business.” He said sounding unsure, but gave me a gentle smile.
“I’ve got everything under control. Trust me.” I lied bluntly. Control? I was a total mess. I had absolutely no idea what my feelings for Owen meant.
Seth gave me a side hug. “I was just worried. Next time I’ll talk to you first.” He said smiling. He was impossible, I was hoping for no more next time, but I was glad we were fine again.
“Changing topics. How did you know Sammy’s address?” I asked with a sly smirk. I enjoyed making him uncomfortable.
“I knew you were going to ask that.” He run a hand through his hair and shook his head.
“So?” I insisted.
“So, nothing. She went to my uncle’s restaurant the other night, it was late, she was alone and I offered her a ride home.” He looked to the rest of the group that were in the water and looked back at me. “Don’t be jealous, I’m not interested.” He said smirking.
“I’m not the one who’s jealous.” I winked at him playfully and left him without words. I walked back to the truck to take out my backpack. There were still a lot of things to do. Clean the camp area to put the tents, the grill, but no one seemed to care about that. They were too busy having fun. I needed to arrange everything before I went back.
