....... . . . . . . . . . . . . . .It was midnight when Kousei and I were practicing for a music competition, which could be my last time preforming. I'm saying that this could be my last preformance because I have a medical condition that's slowly killing me. There's no cure, but the doctor said I can preform one last time, so I have to make it count.
Frustrated, I pounded on the keys as I kept messing up. "Hey, you should rest," Kousei wrapped his arms around me.
"I...I'm not gonna give up, not now," I blinked back tears. Funny, I said the same thing when I found out that there's no cure for my sickness. I practiced until my fingers felt like they were going to break away and turn to dust. Kousei looked at the time: 1:00 in the morning.
"I think you've practiced enough," Kousei lifted me onto his back. Since I forgot my wheelchair, a piggy back ride will have to do. On the way home, he walked on the sand by the beach, so I was able to look at calm blue ocean one final time.
"Can we stay here for a little while?" I asked.
"Of course," Kousei placed me on the soft sand, his arms wrapped around me.
"Hey, Kousei?" I looked at the full moon in the sky, "Do you think I'll win the competition tomorrow? I mean, if I make it to tomorrow."
"You will make it to tomorrow, and the next day, and even the following years. You'll win first place in the competition and when you're older, you'll be a famous pianist like you dreamed of! I promise I'll make sure it happens!" Kousei cried as his tears fell onto my arm, which in return made me cry even more.
"Kousei..." I clasped my mouth in surprise. "Thank you," was all that I could say before I hugged him even tighter. We both cried for a few minutes and figured it was time to go home. Kousei carried me on his back, and before I knew it, we were home. At the time, I was a little light-headed, so I don't really remember what happened after we left the beach. All I remember is falling asleep on Kousei's back with my arms wrapped tightly around him.
The next day, I woke up on my soft bed, the feeling of a certain person's hand on mine. I saw a pair of black glasses on my bedside table, and I knew who they belonged to. Yawning, Kousei opened his tired eyes and smiled right at me. "Ready for the big day?" Kousei asked. I nodded and he picked me up onto his back for what could be my final piggy back ride. My parents, who were downstairs eating breakfast, greeted me with a smile as my childhood friend placed me in my seat. After breakfast, we all packed ourselves into our family van, my mom and dad sat in the front, Kousei and I sat in the back.
"You're going to do great, promise," my parents said as they pulled up to the entrance of the auditorium. Kousei kissed my hand and brought his face closer to mine, our noses just barely touching.
"Good luck," he whispered. I nodded my head and began walking towards the auditorium. My outfit was blowing gradually in the wind, the vibrant colors dancing in the breeze. I entered the building, hardly anyone was in the lobby. Even though I'm in the competition, I still grabbed a program for the memories. I quickly found my name on the list, followed by the title "Finalist". For the final round in the piano competition, we were allowed to pick a song of our choice to play. Mine was "River Flows in You", a song that I have greatly connected to my life, especially now. I was the last pianist on the list, typical. Rather then spending my time practicing, I thought about why I picked this song, and who I'm playing for. I'm playing this for my family and my friends, especially for Kousei. Kousei has been by my side ever since we met. He's the one who taught me how to play piano. I was there for comfort in the past when his mother would abuse him, now he's there for comfort when I need it most. Suddenly, I found myself reminesing in the past.
