Author's note: Hey! I know it's been a long time since I've uploaded a one shot, but...surprise! Today (10/23) is Keith's birthday! Keith is my favorite character, besides Lance, and the end of season 4 had me shook. If you have not finished seasons 1 through 4, please go do that. There are some major spoilers from season 4 in this chapter, just a fair warning. I hope you enjoy, and see you in the next chapter! (`・ω・')
It was the night after the mission on planet Naxzela. I woke up in the middle of the night after hearing sounds of someone whimpering loudly. Judging by how close the sound was, I assumed it was Keith. As quickly as I could, I rushed next door into Keith's room to find him crying in his sleep. His knees were brought up to his chest, his arms trembling like he was petrified. Over and over again, he would repeat, "No...please...don't..."
I was reluctant to touch him, so I simply kept calling his name. The more times I called his name, the louder he cried. Finally I grabbed his hand tightly and exclaimed, "Keith, wake up! You're just having a nightmare!" After a few seconds, he calmed down slightly and opened his eyes.
"Why are you here?" He inched away from me. He was still trembling, and he sat in the same postiton with his knees right against his chest.
"Because I'm worried about you. No, wait. Not only am I concerned for you, the entire team is worried sick!" I raised my voice a little, but I took a deep breath afterwards. "You have no idea how worried I was for you yesterday." I started to feel tears form, and I couldn't stop it, so I continued. "When we couldn't penetrate the shield, and you almost crashed into it, that was the first time I truly felt scared. It was like you were ready to give up your own life. Why? Why would you even think about it?" I thought I was gonna break down right at that moment, but I stayed strong. Keith remained silent. I stuck my arms out.
"What are you doing?" He muttered.
With a gentle smile on my face, I replied, "Having a bonding moment." Keith's eyes widened and he inched closer to me. I wrapped my arms around him, and he did the same. "It's okay," I whispered. I could tell that he was actually sad because he was hugging me really tightly and he kept trembling as though he was silently sobbing. After a few minutes, I assumed he was asleep because his heartbeat was relaxed and his eyes were closed. As gently as I could, I carefully began to move him off of me...before he grabbed my hand and made me jump.
"Don't leave...please...don't..." His voice was shaky. I sighed silently and sat closer to him.
"Okay, I won't leave. But please don't ever attempt to sacrifice yourself again. Alright?" Keith nodded. Suddenly, he pulled me close to his chest, his heartbeat was a soft "thump-thump" in my right ear.
"I was terrified," he said. I looked at him with confusion. "I was terrified when we couldn't break the shield yesterday. I didn't know what would happen if Lotor didn't show up." I felt tears swelling up inside of me, but this time, I couldn't hold it back.
"I know it's okay now because I'm in your arms," I mumbled. Uncontrollable tears overcame my body, and I became a crying mess.
"I'm not gonna leave. I promise," Keith brought me even closer to him, and placed a gentle kiss on my forehead. It felt like I was in a hazy dream. I had slightly forgotten about yesterday's troubles and stepped into an alternate reality, one where it was just Keith and I. Without a care in the galaxy, I shut my eyes while my new love cradled me in his arms.
