Dakota's POV:
I swung my legs back and forth while I stared down at the ground. I looked over at Steve he rolled his eyes as Soda sucked up to them socs. One of them looked at me. I looked back down. I'm really shy around socs, but never greasers. If a greaser were to walk up here, I'd smile at them, maybe wave if I knew them. If any soc were to approach me, I'd just keep my head down. The reason why is so they don't say nothing about me about anything else but my head always being down. My best friend Julie feels the same way. She's Two-Bit's sister. She's about two years older than me. She's so much fun to be with. We always laugh at everything, no matter what it is.
Darry's POV:
I picked Soda, Steve, and Dakota up from the DX. Dakota sat in Steve's lap. Steve always talked to Dakota about cars, but she never listens. Soda is her best friend next to Julie. He does things mom and dad would usually do like her hair, have tickle fights, and random things just because he loved being with her. Ponyboy finds her annoying. When he has friends over and she talks to him or one of his friends he shoos her out of his room and will yell at her if she interrupted him while he was reading. (I always have to get on to him about that). However, he'd always catch himself smiling while hearing her giggle at something Two-Bit had said to her. When she got hurt, he would always come running to take care of her. He'll never admit it, but he loves her alot. Two-Bit would always be making her smile. He puts on Mickey Mouse and impersonate him earning a burst of laughter from her. He's never serious around her and that is what she loves the most. Johnny is the one who listens to her rant about her little kid problems and give her advice. He almost always gives her chocolate "secretly". Dally has the biggest soft spot for her. He usually doesn't like little kids, but he LOVES her to death. He calls her little nicknames like "cutie" or "baby". He always has little presents for her and he teaches her how to protect herself and how to cuss. Me, I'm like the father figure to her. I take her on walks and yes, I'm very protective.
I opened the door. Two-Bit was sitting on the counter drinking. Dakota slightly smiled and went to her room. "Hey!" He exclaimed. I rolled my eyes. "Two-Bit, get off my counter."
Two-Bit made an exasperated sigh. "Okayokay, don't have a hissy fit." I could smell the alcohol on him. "Two-Bit, no more beer tonight until you sober up." I said while rummaging through the pots and pans. "Fine then. But if I don't sober up by the time I leave, I'm gonna find somethin."
"That's fine. I just don't want you to get too drunk like you did last time."
Last time he let Dakota take a sip of his beer......she didn't ask, he offered. And that resulted in an ass beating from me.Soda helped me with dinner. I called Dakota to the kitchen. She ran downstairs. "Yeah?"
"Will you tell Johnny and Ponyboy it's time for dinner?"
She nodded and ran upstairs.Dakota's POV:
Ponyboy would probably put me out anyways, but he's with Johnny. He'll go easy. I opened the door. They were both sitting on Ponyboy's bed. "Dakota, go back to your room." Ponyboy said annoyed. He then looked at Johnny. "Please."
"I just wanted to tell y'all that it's time to eat." I said.
"Great, now go back downstairs." Ponyboy glared.
"I am." I said closing the door. I heard the door lock as soon as I closed it. Darry always told me to tell him if Ponyboy locks the door. I never do, but he always knows. I turned around. Julie stood there smiling. I hugged her tightly. "Whoa, loosen your grip Dakota. We've only been apart for a day."I giggled and went back downstairs. Someone picked me up from behind. I didn't even have to look. I knew it was Dally. He always did that when he came over. The rest of the gang was outside smoking. I hate the smell of smoke, so did mommy. Dally pulled something out of his pocket. "Okay, you cannot tell Darry I'm giving you these." He whispered. I nodded. He pulled out some fake cigarettes that were bubble gum flavored. I smiled and hugged Dally. Darry hates it when I have these, I don't know why, but he does. Darry came back in. "Did you tell 'em that it's time to eat?" He asked. I nodded. He went upstairs. Dally put me down, I went over to the table and sat down with Julie. "The next time you leave your door locked, I'm taking it off. You'll have no door." Darry said coming back downstairs with Ponyboy and Johnny behind him. Julie smirked at me, I smirked back. Soon, the gang came in and we ate.
After dinner, Julie and I played with my stuffed animals. The only stuffed animals I really have are Mickey mouse and his friends and Disney movie characters. We played for a good while until Two-Bit said that he'd have to take Julie home. Today was Thursday and only on non school nights she could stay over. I hugged Julie and she left. After that, Darry gave me a bath.
I got in bed and started to read one of the comics I stole from Darry's newspaper. I had a whole stack of them under my bed. It wasn't time for me to go to bed yet, I still had an hour. On school nights I went to bed at 8:30 and fell asleep by 9. On non school nights I get to stay up until 10, if I don't fall asleep before then.
I got out my sketchpad and my marker box. I closed my eyes and started to scribble on the paper. I did this a lot. Julie said that it makes the picture special if it's not anything in particular. I was halfway done when I felt my eyes get heavy. I put the cap back in my marker and held it. I closed my eyes and stuck my thumb in my mouth.
Darry's POV:
I looked at the clock it was almost 8:30. I got up from my chair and started to head upstairs. Soda stopped me at the top. "Whatcha doin Darry?" He asked.
"I'm gonna try to get Dakota to go to sleep." I replied.
"Oh well, I'm pretty sure she's asleep already. I've heard no noise at all come from her room." Soda grinned.
I opened her door. She was asleep! Usually I have to spend maybe a good 15 minutes trying to get her to stay still. I smiled when I saw her marker in her left hand. I carefully took it out of her hand and put it in her box. I set the box aside along with her sketchpad. I kissed the top of her head and turned on her nightlight. I gently shut her door and went back downstairs.
