Dakota tried to stay out of trouble by entertaining herself with a new friend who moved in down the street. But it didn't help, he was a mischievous little kid as well.
Mac Walsh was born in New Jersey. He and his parents moved to Tulsa to get away from the rest of his family, which Dakota completely misunderstood. Why would you move away from your family?
"What kind of name is 'Dakota'?" Mac laughed.
"My mommy and daddy thought I was gonna be a boy." Dakota replied. "I'm sure your name ain't so hot."
"My name is Mac." He boasted. "It's a cooler name than yours."
Dakota giggled.
"What's so funny?" Mac asked.
"Mac is short for MacIntyre." She laughed. "Your name is the same as my principal's."
Mac crossed his arms. "Okay okay. So my name isn't that cool."
Dakota stopped laughing and looked down at her shoes.
"So what do ya do for fun 'round here?" Mac asked.
Dakota shrugged. "Anything. I just ain't supposed to go past the lot."
"What's the lot?" Mac asked.
"C'mon!" Dakota said running to the lot and with Mac following behind. They ran to the vacant lot, which only had a couple more kids from the neighborhood at it.
"This is the lot." Dakota said. "It's where we all hang out."
Mac scoffed. "I would hang out at the playground all by myself in Jersey."
"We do that too." Dakota said pointing at the playground behind them. "We just gotta check in a lot if we do."Mac was about to say something else when a big red Mustang pulled in. All the other kids scattered as a group of socs came out of the car.
"C'mon." Dakota said pulling on Mac's jacket sleeve. "We better go."
"Why?" Mac asked. "We just got here."
"These are socs." Dakota whispered. "We're greasers."
"What's the difference?" Mac asked."The difference is you kids better scram!" One of the socs yelled to them. Dakota and Mac stared at all four socs. Dakota was shaking in her shoes, but Mac was standing tall and proud.
"Hey I know you!" One of the socs said pointing at Dakota. "You're that little girl who hangs out at that mucky old gas station from time to time."
"Oh yeah!" Another one said. "Aren't you the little sister of Soda or something?"
Dakota gulped and nodded.
"Is this your boyfriend?" Another one asked walking up to Mac.
Mac stepped back and scrunched up his nose.
"Awww are you two out on a playdate?""No we were just leaving." Dakota said pulling Mac with her. They backed into the first soc.
"You just got here." He grinned.
"That's what I said!" Mac said.
"This little man knows where it's at." One of the socs said.
"So socs...greasers... what's that all about?" Mac asked.
"Ohhhh. So you're new here, huh?" A soc asked. "You're a greaser. Look at your shoes. They got holes in them. Look at my shoes. Clean, no marks, and no holes. That's the difference."
"So you got cool shoes? That's the difference?" Mac asked.
"No, dumbass! We're rich and you're poor!"
"Okay and?" Mac asked.
The soc was about to answer until the leader of the group stopped him. "Dude, why are you even explaining it when they should've been gone a long time ago?"
"I'm not going anywhere." Mac said.
"Wanna bet?" The leader asked.
"Mac, let's go." Dakota said pulling on Mac again.
"You better listen to your girl."
"She ain't my girl and no. I'm stayin."The socs huddled up together and tried to scare them. Dakota nor Mac were scared. Dakota just didn't want any trouble with anyone, but Mac was clearly looking for a fight like these socs were.
"You wanna eat those words?" One of the socs asked.
"Screw you and your shoes." Mac said before spitting on one of the socs shoes.Dakota grabbed Mac's arm, knowing the socs next move. She was right. They began chasing them. As they ran around the playground like total lunatics, Mac got an idea.
"Hold up!" Mac said stopping Dakota for a second so he could pick up a glass shard.
He picked it up and grabbed Dakota's hand and led her to their car. He started to slash the tires with the glass shard. Dakota laughed, feeling more alive than ever.
