Oscar's POV
I sat in front of Ms. O's desk, waiting for what I thought was an order for more juice boxes.
"I'm promoting Olive to become a Ms. O. You will be in charge of training her for her new job. Please get your Ms. Oinator ready."
Slightly shocked, I replied, "Um okay...I mean, wow! That's great! I'm so happy for her! Right on it!"
Ms. O raised her eyebrow. "Okay, then. What are you waiting for? GO!!"
As I jumped out of my chair and clumsily rushed downstairs, my thoughts overwhelmed me.
It couldn't be true. Olive is...leaving? Of course I should be happy for her, but...after all we've been through? I began to flashback to all the time we had spent together over the last few years.
The time I comforted Olive when she was terrified of Todd.
The joy afterwards when we beat him in the Flip-Floperinator incident.
The pain of feeling responsible for the incident, and the relief after she expressed her forgiveness.
The fun we had solving the Oscarbot 10 case.
Most recently, our talk last Friday. Or more like, confession.
"Hey Oscar, I'm heading out! See ya on Monday!" I glanced up at Olive and smiled.
"See you next week!" I pulled her into a short goodbye hug.
And of course, that's when Oren decided to walk into the lab.
"What are you doing?" He asked, with a reproachful look at me.
"Um, heh, just saying goodbye..." I said, as we quickly pulled away.
"Uh-huh. I'll uh, see you on Monday." He replied, and left the lab.
"Uh...about that..." Olive glanced at me shyly,
"I wanted to tell you something." I finished her sentence for her, and smiled at her curious look.
"You know, we've known each other for several years now, and...I just thought...well, I kinda...I don't know how to say this, but..." I trailed off.
"I like you Oscar."
That's one way to say it.
"Heh, I like you too, Olive."
She smiled and embraced me. I rested my chin on her head, enjoying the moment.
"I've always liked you Oscar. Your quirky side, your serious side, even your awkward side." She giggled into my chest. "I'm so glad I get to be apart of this squad with you."
I pulled away a bit and looked into her eyes.
"Me too."
And now, this.
I pulled the Ms. Oinator out of a drawer in my lab. Guess I'd better get back on up there, I thought, hearing Ms. O yell,
"Olive, Otto, in my office, NOW!"
Olive's POV
I walked into Ms. O's office, not expecting anything new.
And walked out (or rather, bounced out) as a Ms. O.
Underneath the bouncing and squeals of joy, I was depressed. How could I leave the squad—and Oscar—I loved so dearly to run my own squad? Especially after last Friday...
I was shaken from my thoughts as Oscar took me downstairs to begin training.
I reached for a cup filled with brown liquid and took a sip. Coughing over the dirt and water mixture, I glanced up at Oscar questioningly.
"Heh, I guess I just wanted to give you all the options."
Instead of being angry though, I just smiled.
After picking my signature drink, Oscar escorted me to Ms. O's office to continue training. As we got to the top of the stairs, I stopped and rested my hand on his arm. I could see the hurt in his eyes, though well-hidden behind his usual chipper personality.
"Oscar, I don't know what to say. Although I'm happy that Ms. O promoted me, I'm hesitant to leave. I wish I could take everyone with me...especially you. I have enjoyed every moment I've spent with you, and had hoped after last week, that we would be spending a lot more time together. I don't know if I can imagine leaving you." I blushed as Oscar reached out for my hand and gently intertwined his fingers with mine. We began to walk down a corridor, both caught up in our thoughts. I suddenly looked up at him. "Has anything crossed your mind about...us?"
Oscar stopped walking and squeezed my hand. "Th-That's all I can think about. I'm so happy for you. You deserve your new job, and I know you will be a great Ms. O. But...I-I'm going to miss you so much."
Olive, don't cry. Why am I so emotional?
"I-I'm going to miss you too."
With his free hand, Oscar wiped a tear from my face, which did nothing to stop the fresh ones from coming.
I hesitantly gazed into his eyes, and noticed the mistiness of his glasses.
"We'll still see each other sometimes, right?" Oscar asked, his voice cracking a bit.
"Yeah! Otto's having his eleventh birthday party next week!" I replied, a little more optimistic.
Oscar smiled at the realization, "Oh yeah! Forgot about that."
Suddenly I heard footsteps in the hall. Turning around, I saw Oren walking toward us, a smug grin on his face.
"Olive and Oscar? I never pictured you two together!"
I blushed, embarrassed at being caught.
I was surprised at Oscar's bold reply though. Instead of denying it like usual, he simply rubbed his thumb across my hand and said, "Yep!"
Oren raised his eyebrows at the unexpected reply, but didn't have a comeback. He retreated in the direction he had come from.
Oscar and I shared a contented smile, but it was short lived.
"I guess I should get you to Ms. O's office."
I nodded and let him take my arm.
