Chapter 5 - Dementors On The Train

Remus stayed hidden under his jacket even after he had woken up. He heard other voices in the carriage with him, students it sounded like. There were three of them from what Remus could gather as he stayed silent and listened to their conversation. "How did he manage to get past the dementors?" a scared voice sounded from one of the benches, yet Remus could sense a slight tremor of awe in the words.

He immediately knew that these three were talking about Sirius and his incredulous escape from Azkaban. He still could not really believe it himself and he had known the man for over 20 years. Yet Remus knew something that the rest of the world didn't, a way that Sirius could have escaped unnoticed. There was a part of Remus' mind that wondered if Sirius did get out using his animagi form, why did he wait twelve years to do it? There had to have been a reason that Sirius had gotten out now, but what was it?

Remus sat there under his jacket, hearing the words the students spoke to each other but not listening, he was to lost within his thoughts to pay much more attention to them.

Cassadee found an emergency exit near the front of the train and just prayed that she could get it open easily. Just as she was trying to pry the doors open the train came to a sudden stop and Cassadee was flung into the wall and knocked her head resulting in her losing consciousness and slumping to the floor of the train.

Back in the carriage Remus was still huddled under his jacket but more aware of his surroundings. He had felt the train stop and the cold slowly creeping in from the windows, heard one of the students get up and open the door, probably looking to see if there was anyone in the corridor. There was also another one looking out the window, he heard a shaky voice speak "There's something moving out there" and the lights flickered off in the carriage. "I think someone's coming." Remus heard the same shaky voice again, but this time it was accompanied by the crackling of ice forming on the outside of the window, he could see it spreading from the side furthest away. Still under his coat he felt the train jolt and screams of surprise coming from along the carriage.

Remus knew that these were all signs of the dementors coming, he had seen them before, when he was with Cassadee. He remembered how scared she was of them and the tense atmosphere that sat around her for days afterwards. He could only hope that she had gotten off the train already.

He was bought out of his thoughts of Cassadee once again as he heard the door of the carriage slowly slide open and gasps of horror from the students followed shortly after. Remus could sense the dementors and heard the quiet hiss of them attacking someone, feeding off their happiness, something he had only heard once before, but that is not a sound that you can forget.

Remus' eyes shot open and he leaped up from under his jacket and pulled out his wand from his pocket. The dementor was floating further and further into the carriage it's dark presence sucking the happiness from the carriage and more specifically the raven haired student that was trapped in the dementors happiness vacuum. He cast a patronus spell wordlessly and with a flash of blue light the dementor was forced out through the door and away from the students and Remus.

He turned to the boy who was slumped on the seat in the carriage and knew immediately that this was Harry Potter. This was the child that Sirius supposedly broken out of prison to kill. The boys eyes slowly dropped and he lost consciousness and fell even further onto the bench and laid there motionless.

Cassadee sat up after what felt like hours but she knew it had been only a matter of minutes. Her joints were stiff and as she pushed herself into a sitting position she felt her back click several times but it made her feel more aware of the shooting pain inside of her head. The pain was slowly spreading but the majority of it was concentrated to a specific point on the side of her head. The dizziness got to her and she felt the bile rising up her throat.

As she unloaded her stomach onto the floor she saw a platinum blonde haired student coming out of his carriage. She tried to ask for help but her throat was burning and she could not form words. "He....hel....help..." she managed to stutter out but the boy did not look her way as he shut the door to the carriage behind him and began to walk off.

When she coughed he turned around and looked for the source of the sound, expecting it to be Pansy Parkinson, who had been bothering him since first year. Instead he saw a mysterious woman hunched over, supporting herself on the wall. "Get... Remus... Please..." He heard her weak voice stutter before her eyes rolled back and she fell completely to the floor.

Draco did not know who this woman was but he guessed she was one of the new teachers he had heard his father talking about during the holidays. He knew he could not just leave her laying there, Despite what most people thought about him, Draco did not enjoy seeing people hurt but he also had no clue who the 'Remus' person was. Looking around draco saw no other students in the corridor of the train so guessed that he would have to do this himself. Draco tried to think of a way to get this woman help and find 'Remus' as he tried to move her into an empty carriage next to them.
