Chapter 17 - Potter Is Not A Common Name
Hermione knew that she recognised the woman who bumped into her on the train. She had a suspicion that she looked like Harry but then convinced herself that it was nothing but a trick of her eyes. McGonagall's speech confirmed her original suspicions as well as sending her mind into a whirl of thoughts. The name Lupin did not bring any specific thoughts to her, as she just assumed that was the man who was in their carriage on the train. Potter. That was not a common name in the wizarding world, it was no coincidence that she looked like Harry. She had a definite relation to him. Hermione had so many questions running through her head, but knew that she would have to find them out somehow. She dragged Harry towards a sofa in the common room when he tried to ambush McGonagall, she knew he wanted answers but this was neither the time nor place for him to get them.
The entire common room was whispering about the speech that their head had just given. They were all curious about the new defence teachers, especially due to the familiar last name. Some had parents who went to school with the Potter twins, had been told tales about what the group of Gryffindors got up to, so were the ones many students gathered around to listen to any information they could gather. Many of them kept glancing at the golden trio during the snippets of stories that different students were telling, they were all curious about his confused expression, surely he knew this woman?
Remus had left Cassadee in the hospital wing, after basically being forced out by Pomfrey under the assurance he would be directly called upon if her condition was to change. He had to get rested himself, but how could he sleep knowing that Cassadee might not be alright. Even after all of the reassurances that he had been given, Remus could only manage to assume the worst. He knew that if he were to lose another friend, he wouldn't be able to go on, not again. After manually unpacking all of his belongings as a way to distract himself, Remus laid down on his bed and thought through all that had happened since he had first boarded the train. How much he had changed and how he was almost exactly the same scared boy that boarded that train.
Waking up the next morning, Remus immediately got ready and headed to the hospital wing. He had no idea of the time but knew that it was early as he only saw one student on his walk through the school. Once he had arrived into the room he headed towards the bed that Cassadee had occupied the day before, btu the sheets were fresh and looked untouched. He looked around, beginning to panic, scared that something had happened. "Remus!" A voice shouted from behind him now. He spun around at a ferocious speed and saw Cassadee standing there smiling, the only evidence that yesterday had happened was the slight scar on her forehead. He immediately ran to her and wrapped his arms around her feeling a rush of comfort from the friendly embrace. This was all of the emotions he felt on the platform, the happiness of knowing that he wasn't alone anymore. All of the fear in the past 16 hours had culminated and then disappeared in that exact moment. He was so glad to have his friend back.
Cassadee had woken up to a silent hospital wing. She saw the empty chair beside her bed and her heart sunk slightly, she was hoping to see Remus sat there, waiting for her to wake up. She knew that she shouldn't expect that, not after the amount she had put him through, but yet she couldn't help the sinking feeling in her chest as she stared at the empty chair.
Whilst her mind was reeling, Madame Pomfrey stepped towards her, "He was waiting here most the night you know." Cassadee looked up at her, "It was a struggle to get him to leave, kept insisting that he'd be fine sleeping in the chair. I made him go up, he doesn't get enough sleep as it is so that couldn't work." Relief spread over Cassadee, she didn't know why. She knew that Remus cared deeply for her, he was another brother to her, so why did she ever think that he would just leave her. "Because you left him" a voice in her head reminded her. She desperately tried to ignore that voice, she had classes to teach today, she couldn't let this get to her.
When she saw Remus frantically looking around the room she was elated, he really cared about her. "Let's go. We've got a breakfast feast to eat." She winked at him as she wrapped an arm around his shoulder and pulled him towards the door. "Have you been cleared for today?" Remus' concern came back in full force. Cassadee just smirked as she continued pulling him out the door. They walked through the corridors like this, Remus asking so many questions out of concern and Cassadee smirking, pulling him along without saying a word. This was how they had spent many of their years in this castle.
Reaching the hall Cassadee paused, she took a breath and looked at the closed doors. The last time she had stepped through them she was with James, Sirius, Remus, Peter and Lily. They were laughing and joking, they were all still alive. It had gone down from six of them to two, the years had really not been kind to these two. They were about to walk back into a place full of so many memories for each of them. Even though the memories at Hogwarts were the best that either of them could have hoped for, it was the people that this place reminded them of. This was the best and the worst place that both of them could ever come back to. They just needed to be ready for whatever could come their way. They needed to be ready together.
The breath meant that they were able to look at each other, take a breath and open the doors.
