"Kira there is a table" Joey says to me from his place at the counter. I have been just standing up against the wall for the past ten minutes. No one has come in everyone has been leaving but we will be getting the lunch rush soon. It's only a quarter after ten meaning that it is finally to the point where everyone is at work or in school. That also means that until about eleven-thirty it will be completely dead and very, very, boring and long. I get the notepad from my apron and go toward the table, they smile when they see me coming. It is a young couple who are sitting on the same side of the booth holding hands over the table.
"Good morning guys, what can I get you?"
"I will have a blueberry muffin and a caramel latté." I nod and write down the order and the price.
"I will take a banana nut muffin and a black coffee"
"All right I will be back with that in a second" I walk back to the counter and get the muffins. "Latté, stat" I point to Joey and he starts to make one. I go around the counter and pour the black coffee. I get out a tray and set the muffins, coffee and napkins on it. I take it back to the table where the couple is now eskimo kissing. I set the drinks and muffins down in front of them as they look up to me with big smiles.
"Here you go" I put the bill down on the table beside them before heading back to the counter. I start to clean the counter, using the spray from the counter I wipe it down again. I move things around making sure to get under the muffin holder, and then when I'm done with the countertop I go around to the front and do the display. I crouch down and scrub at it to get the fingerprints and smudges from the children that come in sometimes with their parents.
"Excuse me" I am tapped on the shoulder by someone, I stand straight and turn around to them.
"Can I help you with something?"
"Is there a man named Joseph here"
"Hey Joe," I say loudly, Joey comes out from the back room out to beside me.
"Is there something I can help with?"
"Yes you are Joseph Vinny"
"Yes sir"
"I am Daniel Towel you came to see me the other day about a loan"
"I will, uh, hold down the fort, if you guys want to go talk" I say to Joe,
"Thanks, sir" Joey says to the man and they go to sit at a table. I don't know what he needs a loan for but it doesn't matter to me. Some people start to come up and pay for their orders, giving me generous tips, one person gave me ten pounds, then I only got two from the next person but the store kept emptying out. Soon the only people left were Joey, the man and I. I go back to the back room and look for my name on the schedule. I should have a break at twelve o'clock which I am very happy about. But if we are as busy today as we usually are around that time I won't be getting a break until later.
I look at the clock, it's almost eleven thirty. Has it really been an hour? The coffee shop just got empty now it will be filling back up again. I go back out to the counter seeing all the people rushing through the door, they all start coming to the counter and I panic. I stand at the register as the first five people come and start shouting orders at me. I do my best to start making orders and listening to demands from the people. I get the first couple drinks done as I ring people up and collect money. People are literally just throwing money on the counter. They aren't taking the change from the order. They are giving money, taking the coffee and leaving.
"Don't you guys want change?"
"Keep it!" The group of businessmen rushes out the door in their Giorgio Armani suits holding coffee. I turn my attention back to the lot of high school kids begging for coffee and pastries from the display. I get about fifteen kids and get all their orders which is almost about fifty pounds. They hand me fifty-five and I put it in the register and get out five pounds change.
