We begin to walk down the streets without saying a word to each other. I chew my lower lip and look at the ground.
"So, what did you want to do?" Tobias asks. I shrug and keep on walking. "Do you want ice cream?" He asks. I look at him for a few moments. He stands with his shoulders hunched and his hands deep in his pockets.
"I've got no money." I say and look up at the ice cream parlour.
"It's fine, it's on me." He says and starts to walk towards the door. I let out a groan.
"You don't have to pay for me." I say. He lets out a small laugh and holds the door open for me anyway.
"No Tobias, Please-" He doesn't listen and drags me through the door. It's a small place that looks like it's stuck in the 60's, black and white checkers line the floor and they have red booths and chairs. There's a juke box in the far corner. We walk up to the counter.
"What can I get you kids?" A woman behind the counter asks. Her makeup hides her age but makeup doesn't hide her wrinkles.
"What do you want?" Tobias asks. I look at the ice creams. All alone in their tubs but they still spirt bright colours. Mint is a light green, vanilla is a creme. All these different colours and all I want you want to do is eat them. I think I robbed an ice cream parlour once.
"I'll take chocolate please." I say and the woman begins to scoop it into a cone.
"Make that 2" he says with a smile. The lady nods and begins to do a second one. She hands them to us and smiles as she rings it through the till.
"You two together or something?" She asks. Her faint New Jersey accent seeping through.
"We are-"
"Friends." I say with a firm smile "just friends." She smiles slightly.
"Well, you two would make a great couple." She says and hands Tobias the receipt.
"Thank you." He says and smiles down at me. I glare back. We walk out the shop and back down the street.
"So, do you still not want to tell me who did this to you?" He asks, raising his eyebrow. Then I realise what he's done.
"You plan to bribe me with food!" I say and he lets out a small laugh.
"Maybe..."
"Well it's not working." I say firmly. His goofy grin immediately falls. We eat our ice creams. "I don't know how long it's been since I've had had this." I say taking the final bite from my cone.
You see trying to changing the subject with Tobias Eaton never works. Once he's got his mind set on something he won't forget it. He's like a cat that won't let go of its prey once it's got it.
"You know if you just tell me, I can help. The whole gang can. We can go to the cops-"
"All I want to do is go home." I say and glare at him.
I know I'm being the biggest bitch in world right now but, he just reminds me of what I used to have. I used to have a family, not my real family but still a family, that loved me for me. Not just because I'm a good their. I used to have friends that I could just call. That I could just talk to. Now it's hard to even look at them. They look at me like I'm a victim. They look at me like I'm lost. I used to have a boyfriend that I love.
Now I have a father who hates me. A friend who's as lost as I am and somebody who looks out for me when I don't want them too.
"Tris. I'm not the one who threw away a family who loved them! Im not the one who walked past their only true friends in the street." He yells and straightens up, towering over me. He's not Tobias.
"How can you say that! Cody died saving me! If that's not true friendship what is!" I yell back.
"You threw away a life, Tris for someone who beat you every night. Who's scarred you for the rest of your life! You threw that all a away for him." He says. I shake my head.
"If only you knew the real reason." I spit through gritted teeth.
"Well what is it? Tell me!" He says. I gulp and force back the tears that threaten to expose themselves.
"I-I can't!" I whisper.
"There is is again! Why can't you tell me!" He shouts. We look at each other. Silent and gasping. We're both finally calm. He throws his hands up in surrender. "Look, I just want to help and-"
"Well guess what, Tobias! I don't need it and I don't want it! I can take care of myself!" I yell. He looks taken back. He nods and steps away.
"Good talk," He says and shoves his hands deep into his pockets and turn away. His shoulders slump and he turns back. "It's like I don't know who are anymore, come back when Tris is back. Good bye, Beatrice." He turns away and slings his bag over his shoulder and walk back down the street.
"Good bye, Four." I mutter and pull my hood back over my head. I walk back through the streets, I pull the dog chains out and yank them off. Staring at them, I throw the chains into the drain. They clatter and fall.
