"Innocent." Tobias says and they all burst through the doors. I let out the biggest sigh I've ever held in. Tobias sweeps forward along with Christina. She walks past him and comes to stand next to me."And you are?" The judge questions.
"I am- was- the girlfriend of Will Shumacer." She replies simply.
"Are you to testify against Beatrice?" She questions again, beginning to become confused.
"No." She pauses for a moment as if the words won't come to her. "She's my friend. She's innocent." She says but the words sound forced.
The judge nods and gestures for her to begin and Christina does.
"Tris would never do anything like this. She's been framed. I loved Will. I loved with all my heart and now he's gone and he's never coming back and the fact that my best friend killed him sickens me. It sickens me to my stomach. But I know Tris. She was my friend. Will's friend and she would never kill him. He loved her like a sister. I can't prove whether he's guilty or not. But she wasn't the only one there that night. She was shot. How could she shoot another?" Christina finishes and I feel like crying.
Then David has to get up and ramble about forensic evidence and how my hand print is on the gun. How my DNA is on the gun. Why can't Al come and confess. Why won't he just admit to it?
The judge looks over to the jury, who's heads have been swinging back and forth between Christina and David. Finally after their argument the judge smacks the hammer onto the podium calling for order. David sits back down in a huff. Glaring at me. I turn a blind eye. Trying not to notice it.
"The jury have come to a conclusion." The judge announces. "Miss Prior if you would stand to hear your sentence." She says while shuffling papers. "The jury and I have come to a conclusion that this case is still open. Therefore this is inconclusive. There have been no witness statements. No witnesses have come forward. Seeing as you are still a teenager, the jury feel like you need more time while we think about it more." She explains. David's face drops as she says this. I turn to Tobias and smile. Happiness consumes me.
"However. You are not innocent. There is still forensic evidence against you. But I don't think a handle of a gun is enough to put you away for the rest of your life. Until they have completed the autopsy in the morgue this trial is inconclusive. But until this trial is picked up again. You will be tagged by the ankle. You will only be able to be in your foster home or at school. No in between. Other then that this Trial is over." She completes and slams the hammer onto her podium. One of the guards grabs me by the arm and pulls me away towards the door.
I look over my shoulder to see Tobias grinning at me. I manage to smile back. I'm not guilty. Not in a sense anyway. But I have committed crimes. I think the tag would've happened either way. Can't just have an accused teenager wandering round. It's just not done like that. We walk down the hall. Another guard passes me my clothes folded in a neat pile. She points to a room for me to get changed. I walk back out in my normal clothes. She gestures for me to come over. I nod. There's no point in trying to fight it.
"Your under house arrest." She says as she straps it on. "Don't leave your foster home unless it's for school. Your new social worker will take you to school and pick you up. The school will be given one of these." She hold up a black box "and so will your foster home. If you go out of range. The police will be alerted and an alarm will go off. If you try to escape. We will find you." She tightens it and finishes. I grab my backpack with everything in it. I follow her out of the grey room and into a waiting area.
She tells me to take a seat and I comply. I sit and wait. One hour. Two hours. Nothing. Then a guy in a grey knit sweater walks in. He looks around the room and his eyes fall onto me.
"You must be Beatrice Prior." He says extending a hand. I don't shake it. Why should I?
"Just Tris." I say and he nods, pulling his hand back awkwardly . He walks over to the female cop and she passes him papers that he fills out.
Finally he finishes and they pass him two black boxes. One for school and another for the home. She quickly sets them and we head out of the door.
"I'm Amar by the way." The social worker says. I nod but don't say much he puts the black boxes in the passenger seats and I get in the back.
The car ride is silent. No words are exchanged at all. We just sit there. Amar tries to turn on the radio. But it crackles the whole time. So that just results in more awkward silence. Finally we pull up to the home. The one that I met my dad in, when my leg was still dead. He stops and walks round to open the door for me. But I'm out too quick so he just grabs the boxes. I walk up to the front door. Amar follows and knocks. The Matron from Michigan answers.
You've actually got to be kidding me.
A smirk comes to her wrinkled face.
"Beatrice Prior." She muses "how have they not locked you up yet. For everything you've done. Thank you Amar. That will be a for today." She tells him. He hands her the boxes and says goodbye. He drives off and desserts me.
"How are you here?" I whine.
"Transferred." She says with a shrug and pulls me in. She holds me by the arm and makes me wait outside of her office. She dumps the boxes and drags me upstairs. She opens the second door on the right. A girl on her phone momentarily looks up then looks back down again.
"Nita?" Whys she here.
"Nita, this is your new roommate Tris." Matron knows I don't do well with roommates.
"I've already told you,Matron, I don't want to share a room with a murdering scum bag." I glare at her when she looks up. A smirk forms on her lips. "even if she hasn't murdered the boy. I don't want to share with gang scum." She finishes and I feel my knuckles clench and my face heat up.
"Well girls you'll just have to sort it out. This is the only available space we've got and the state don't want her away from school." She says and slams the door. Nita glares at me and walks over to shove me backwards. I land on the bed. She towers over me.
"Touch any of my stuff you die." She says "watch your back ,Stiff."
