Tris
Alone is a strong word. But not only is it a word it's an emotion. And I've never felt so alone in my life.
I sit in my cell. Alone. The 4 dark grey walls tower over me as I sit on the bed with my knees drawn up to my chest. The only thing that keeps me company is the gentle dripping of the tap that could and is driving me insane. I don't know what day it is. Time seems to slip away when you spend days in the same place. I don't even know when my trial is and that's the hardest part. I can't prepare for what's coming.
They bring me breakfast. I don't touch it. After knowing what the food was like at Juevey I don't ever want to touch prison food again.
Then a guard walks in dressed in their normal black uniform.
"Tris Prior?" He says uncertainly looking down at the clip board.
"The one and only." I mumble.
"You've got visitors." He says "come on." He makes me get us and I put my hands in front of me. Expecting hand cuffs. "You won't need them." He says shaking his head and pushes me out of the cell. He guides me through the twisting corridors and into the visitors room.
I sit down and wait. Wondering. Who would want to visit me? Why?
At least it's not David.
When the person finally walks through the door my jaw drops. They were the last person I was expecting.
"Christina." I breathe and have to stop myself from crying. I feel the tears well in my eyes, threatening to burst through.
She came. She of all people came to see me.
She's wearing old joggers and a white tshirt. Her hair is in a messy bun and her eyes are red and puffy. She looks sad and I caused this pain.
Christina
I walk in and her mouth instantly drops. I'm probably the last person she expected to see right now. I march straight towards that gaping idiot and decide to get straight to the point.
"I'm not here for you. I'm not here for Tobias. I'm here for Will because surprisingly I need answers from the person who killed him." I snap glaring at her. She stares at me for a moment. Her face showing. Nothing. No emotion. I expected her to be taken back or startled. Afraid.
She looks down like a dismissive child and begins to play with her uniform. She doesn't make eye contact when she begins to speak.
"I didn't." She says "that's your answer. I didn't kill Will." She says slowly articulating every single word just to get her message across.
Now it's my turn for my jaw to drop.
She's not lying.
I'm Candour. I can tell if people are lying or not. That's why I'm becoming a lawyer. It's a gift I have. Arguing and seeking the truth. She's not lying.
She didn't kill him.
"I never put the bullets in his back. But that doesn't mean I'm innocent." She says still looking down. "I'm the reason he's dead, Chris." She looks up and tears are running down her face. "I'm so sorry." She says and reaches for my hand but stops knowing she can't touch me or they'll take her away. I pull my hand away anyway. I don't want her of all people to comfort me.
I may believe she didn't do it but that doesn't mean everything is fine. It a
doesn't go back to normal."Tell me." I say. She nods and pulls herself together. She tells me everything. Everything. The reason she left. The reason she was came back to Chicago. The reason she was in that alley in the first place. That she is the reason Will is dead.
When she stops. I feel all the air being knocked out of me. I grip the edge of Will's Joggers. The ones he used wear when he was being lazy.
All I can do is nod. I'm almost in shock.
"I'll be there tomorrow. At your trial. But this doesn't change anything. Just remember that." And I get up and walk away not turning back. I'm going to the trial. Not for her. For Tobias. For Will.
Tobias deserves another chance with her.
Tobias
Christina walks out and I get up from the waiting room couch. I pull her into a hug.
"How'd it go?" I ask.
She shakes her head.
"She told me everything." She says and my eyes widen.
"Everything?" I repeat and she nods.
"Go and see her." She has her voice shaking.
I listen and walk towards the door. But pause before I open it. I don't know what's on the other side. I gulp and push open the door.
Tris sits in the middle table in the room. Guards line the outside of the room. Other prisoners sit on other tables. She's fumbling with her uniform. A black jumpsuit.
Tris only looks up once I've sat down. As soon as she looks up she looks back down again.
"Hi" I say.
"Hey." She mumbles her eyes still avoiding mine.
"We're going to get you out." I state and let my eyes wander around the room. Men and woman meeting with families, friends and Colleagues, they hold people here and then decide what to do with them. Every single person in this room is in the same situation. Everyone is trying to save their loved ones. Except we're different. We're the youngest people here right now.
"They're never going to let me go, I'm just glad that Christina came and knows that I didn't do it." She pauses for a moment, trying to pick the right words that fit like pieces in puzzle. "I just it brings her some kind of peace, you know." She finishes with a simple shrug.
I want to reach out. Comfort her. Tell her everything is going to be ok. I want to yell at them to let her go. That she should be set free.
"I'm the reason he's dead, Tobias." She whispers. Then everything spills like an avalanche. She tells me everything. I mean what has she got left to hide? She tells me why she left. She left to protect me. To protect all of us. She took the pain. The beatings. For us.
She didn't look back. She didn't look back she knew that if she left. We would get hurt. She did it for us.
"Visitor session is up!" A guard barks "All visitors must now leave!" People get up instantly. I wait a few moments and clench my jaw.
I want to keep this moment. Just us two. No matter where it is. No matter what happens tomorrow. Just us two in the moment.
I feel someone tap my shoulder. I turn around extremely slowly.
"Sir, we're going to have to ask you to leave." I clench my jaw.
"10." I say to her. She blinks for a moment.
"10" she replies and with that a guard comes to take her away and back through the bars into the prison.
