I stood from the bed and made way my to the small sink in the left hand corner of the washed out blue room. I ran the cold tap and splashed my face with water.
I picked up my bag and opened the door to exit. Moving my hand around my bag without actually bothering to look in it I tried to find my phone. After a minute of annoyance I felt it and grabbed it.
My notifications were at the highest they'd ever been but I ignored them to phone my Mom.
It rung several times before she answered.
"Sweetheart I'm very busy." Her voice became more high pitched when she was pissed.
"Mom I'm in the nurses offices- yes I'm fine- no I don't have a concussion- can you pick me up?"
She gasped "Yeah I'm taking my lunch break in about 10 I'll come and get you and we can get McDonalds on the way home?" Her tone was more gentle now.
"Thanks Mom." I smiled through the phone.
"Okay dokes. Love you." She hung up and I headed towards reception.
"My Moms picking me up." I told the woman behind a desk as she sat twiddling a pen around.
"And..." She raised her eyebrows.
"Do you not need to tell my guidance councillor or something?" I asked.
She rolled her eyes and swung her seat to face the computer to her right "Done." She fake smiled as I nodded.
They automatic doors opened as I approached them. I was greeted by a very stern looking Mrs Cambridge she was the mother of Ellie in my year. She had been standing next to Luke before he.. I half smiled at her she sighed at me.
"I'm so sorry." She whispered as she passed me. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion but didn't press her as she looked as though she had enough on her mind.
I stood with one hand on my hip and the other by my side as I waited for my mother. Eventually her mint green car came round the corner and she unlocked the doors. I climbed in the front and flung my bag in the backseat.
"Tell me what happened." She almost demanded as she pulled out of the schools parking lot.
I bit my lip until I tasted the metallic flavour of blood in my mouth.
"Keira please answer me I'm worried." She found my hand as we stopped at a traffic light and squeezed it.
"I don't really know." I shook my head.
"I'll call your Principal first thing tomorrow." She replied sternly.
I put my window down and let the cold breeze hit my hand with my other I turned up the radio which was playing 'Somebody Else' by the 1975. I scanned the empty streets for any sign of happiness to lift my mood. There was none. Anyone we did pass was too lost in their own bubble to bother smiling at the people they were passing by. Everyone looked so alone. It didn't matter if they were with 1 or 10 other people everyone was alone, self involved and careless. It took Luke Hemmings to help me realise it.
