"Lana!" Lana's mother yelled down the basement. "You're not going to school today!"

"Why?" I called up as I struggle to get out of bed.

"They're at it again...now get up. I need you to watch Colden." I groaned. Colden and I would normally go to school but these dumbasses have a habit to drive by and shoot random things, even people. Throwing on jeans, a shirt, and sneakers. I head my way upstairs away from my dirty basement bedroom.

"Lock the doors..and the windows. Do you have your weapo-"

"Mom, we'll be okay." I give her a smile. She hugged me and headed out the door to work. I went to the living room and turned T.V on. I made myself comfortable on the couch and turned on the news. Colden hated the news so I watched it while he was still asleep. Reports of shootings, stabbings, and car crashes. I sighed. The usual.

"Lana?" A confused little voice came from the far end of the living room. Colden padded in in his usual toy story pajamas. "Lana?" he said again but this time with panic. I stood up so he can see me and when he did I saw the relief spread across his face. "Did someone die?"

"Colden, many people die everyday. Please be more specific." He moved Infront of the T.V.

"I mean did someone die here?" He glanced from me and the T.V. "I heard mommy yell and I figured they were shooting again, so I watched out the window to see if it was true this time. I haven't seen any-"

"You know your not allowed to look out the window when these happen!" His mouth formed a line. "They could have seen you!" He looked at the ground with a frown. I sighed. I kneeled down and hugged him.
"No. No one has died yet." She smirked. He perked up at that. "Now you go get dressed."
