Desmond walked into the room, carrying some papers in a clipboard.
"Desmond!" I cheer. "How is he?" I ask, hoping for good news.
"Hello Page. Thought I would come to let you know Hunter is fine, he will make a full recovery in no time!" Desmond replies. "Now, your operation is in a couple hours, so you need to get ready for that!" Desmond continues. I rub the back of my neck.
"About that Desmond... I want to postpone. At least until Hunter is a little better." I tell Desmond. He looks over to me, shocked.
"You know Hunter would want you to see the operation through!" He tells me, reminding me of Hunter's kindness over the past few days. A tear rolls.
"Are you sure you can manage the both of us?" I ask. Desmond nods, a smile appearing.
"Of course we can!" He replies. "So, the operation going on?" He asks, hopeful.
"In support of Hunter, because he would want it to happen still." I reply. Desmond smiles, nodding.
"Of course he would!" Desmond cheers. "I'll go prep. You should too." He goes to leave the room.
"Desmond?" I call. He turns to face me, listening once again. "How long will it be before Hunter is better?" I ask. Desmond comes and sits on the corner of my bed.
"Page... We suspect he will be walking for tomorrow, as I know of your arrangements. He will be released about the same time as you will for your holiday." I smile, happy for the answer. "Your friends found out about Hunter about ten minutes ago, they are heading in to see you and Hunter. Hunter and I will make sure they are out in time for your operation. We know you want them to know tomorrow earliest, and we will make sure that happens for you." Desmond tells me. I sigh in relief.
"Thank you." I say. "To Hunter also." I end. "Bring on the visitors then!" I cheer. Desmond leaves, making sure Hunter is okay, and to visit our visitors. I get out my sketchbook, sketching a palm tree, with the group under it all together. I lightly shade the colours in, completing the picture in about twenty minutes. I place the sketchbook back into its draw just as the door opens to reveal Nick and Bobby. "Hi guys!" I say, depression hinted in my tone.
"Hey Page." Bobby replies in the same tone as mine. "You know what happened to Hunter? No-one will say, not even Hunter himself!" She asks, explaining. I shake my head, lying as Hunter doesn't want them to know.
"Sorry, I don't... he got here late last night, and that's when I found out. Knew nothing before. I so wish I did, Bob! I really do!" I reply, lying so easily to their faces.
"Okay, that's fine Page." Bobby says, disappointment obvious. I lean over and give her a hug, letting go of my guilt in the process. I pull away, sitting back in my bed seat, sighing heavily. Nick sits on the edge of my bed, grabbing my hand. I remember the moment I was told about the operation, how Hunter was in the very same position. I feel a tear fall at the memory. I quickly wipe the tear, Nick noticing too soon.
"Page?" He wearily speaks. "You okay?" He asks. I realise I have to make an excuse, fast.
"Yeah, I could be better." I say, coming up with an excuse. "I just remembered when my long lost cousin used to do this when I was ill and he was over." I sniff, hoping that Nick falls for it.
"Oh, Page!" He exclaims. "I'm sorry." He hugs me, causing another tear to roll. Hunter was too kind. I hug back, sniffing back genuine tears. Nick pulls away, standing up from the bed and standing up to Bobby. I look between them. "Look, we gotta tell you something..." I internally gasp, realising they were gonna try to tell me about Hawaii now. I act tired.
"Look, I'm sorry, but, can you tell me tomorrow? I'm super tired." I say, yawning to add effect.
"Yeah, sure Page!" Bobby replies. She drags Nick out the door, pulling him to Hunter's room. I look at my watch. Forty-five minutes to my op. I hope Hunter can get them out in time.
Half an hour later, Desmond enters the room.
"Hey Page. The guys are gone and it's time for your op. You ready?" He asks. I nod my head, mentally preparing for this new change. "Okay, let's go!" Desmond calls for a couple more nurses and they wheel me into Hunter's room.
"Hunter!" I wake him to say hi before I go in. He rubs his eyes, looking over to me.
"Page! Op time?" I nod in reply. "Page, you will be fine. See you on the other side!" He leans over and hugs me, before waving his hands to tell me to go. I smile as I get wheeled into the theatre. This is it. The operation to get me back on my feet!
