A light and eerie veil of fog shades the woods, the tiny droplets freshen my skin as I walk through it. It is dawn already, I am shocked at how fast the night has gone by and feel positively knackered after my encounter with the Immortals. A few rays of sunlight filter through the tall trees and are absorbed by the fog, making it look pink and yellow. Rosewood cottage stands in the middle of these trees, surrounded by a small garden of wild roses that gift the air with their beautiful perfume. This is the place I am proud to call my home and it is beautiful, even though it has a cliché name.
My energy starts growing and my strength is finally coming back to me. Elves live surrounded by nature, it's our source of energy and wellbeing, here I am invincible, while in the city there are very few places where I can get my strenght from. These woods used to be filled with elves, but now they stand empty and silent. What is left of my fellow elves is now dust and dirt, I am the last one left, the last specimen of an extinct species.
I crouch down to smell the beautiful flower bushes and relax in the silence, only broken by birds, which are just starting to wake up and tweeting lazily above me.
"Meow." A familiar little voice calls me.
"Hello, Tinkerbell." I greet her, stroking her white fur and scratching her behind the ears, just where she likes it. She answers purring loudly.
I sight picking her up and pushing the door to my house open. Sometimes I can't help but to be sad, I wish I had someone waiting for me when I get home, it feels so damn lonely to have an empty house.
Tinkerbell snuggles in my arms as if she knows what I'm thinking.
"Yes, baby, I know I have you, but sometimes... Sometimes I just need more." I scratch her head and put her on the kitchen counter. I gulp down a whole glass of water and jump on the sofa.
"A van exploded in the nightlife district, the police are trying to find out whether it was the work of an arsonist or simply an accident. There are NO casualties, I repeat, NO casualties."
I turn off the TV as quickly as I turned it on: I hate the damn thing. Plus, watching the news makes me sad, they only report about murders and stupid politics.
Beep beep beep.
"Yes?" I pick up my cell, yawning in the process.
"Is the job done?" A metallic voice asks me.
"No, it isn't done." I answer coolly. "You should've at least informed me of the fact Alexandros was in town and very keen on saving the two dumbasses."
Silence. Since when did he go silent?
"Meow." Tinkerbell jumps on the sofa and cuddles up in a ball on my stomach. My tone must've frightened her.
"We are sorry, we had no knowledge of it." he spoke. "Do you still accept the job?"
"I'll think about it. " I hang up and stroke my baby's fur.
I enter in a huge flowery garden, but I don't recognize it as my own. There are tulips growing everywhere, even black ones that I had never seen before. I stop to observe them better, they look soft and delicate, but strong and dangerous at the same time.
"Baby?" Her voice sends shivers running down my spine and suddenly tears start flowing from my eyes.
"Mum?" I ask, but I don't see her anywhere. "Where are you?"
"I am here." she comes out from a tree, as if she was transcendent, made of nothing but thin air.
"Where are we?" I ask and start hearing some other voices, laughing voices. I follow the sound, caressing the flowers I find along my way and feeling nature's energy flowing inside me, growing stronger and stronger as I approach the sounds I am hearing.
Then I finally find them, there is a group of you elves, with long fair hair and soft white gowns.
"This is impossible-"
"It is not." My mother touches my shoulder and I immediately try to put my hand on hers.
"Why can't I touch you?" I ask, feeling slightly upset and craving the contact.
"Because I am dead and this is my spirit. My body is now dust, dirt, flowers, trees- But remember, whenever you need me, whenever you need us, we'll be there. You just have to call for us." She smiles and strokes my cheek.
"I remember them." I study the elves in front of me intently, it's like they don't know I'm there but I can see them ll the same.
"You must wake up now, my dear." She smiles sadly.
"I don't want to, I like it here."
"One day you'll be allowed to stay here with us, but this is not the day." She smiles and pushes me away.
I wake up smiling, but my peaceful state of mind is quickly runied by the sound of someone approaching the house. My elf senses are on alert: no one knows of this place a part from Tinkerbell and me, and it's not like she would tell. I can hear the steps, though very light as if that someone was floating.
I grab my guns and my swords and listen, closing my eyes and concentrating only the sounds that surround my house. Bids are chirping and the wind is blowing through the trees.
The steps stop and the whispering starts.
"Are you positive this is the place?"
It's Alexandros, I don't know how, but he managed to find me. My heart starts beating faster and harder, nearly deafening me and covering every other sound. I breathe deeply.
"Yes." Another voice answers him, a female voice. "I can smell her, she has a pure heart."
"That makes it all more difficult." He sighed.
