"If we are to kill the men coming after us we need to be at our maximum strength." Alexandros speaks looking right in front of him. It's strange to see him drive a car, it's something I never pictured an Immortal doing.
"You know I am not even close to mine." I sigh taking in the beautiful countryside.
"Yes, I am aware. That is the reason why we are going back to your home."
"I no longer have a home and I'd rather not see the burnt down version of it." My upset tone must have triggered something inside him because his grip on the steering wheel tightens and his knuckles turn white.
"Please, trust me." I try to understand what's going on in that beautiful head of his but I only end up shaking mine in defeat.
"Okay, whatever." I give up.
"Have you any idea about who is attacking us?" He asks changing the subject and visibly relaxing against the leather seat of his black SUV.
"No. I mean, I have worked for them for a long time but I've never actually met any of them, they called me and transferred the money once the job was done, no contact a part from that." I sigh, not even knowing where to start from.
My normal reaction to all of this would be to ignore the problem and hide, which of course isn't possible since they somehow found out where I live and, even worse, that they have tried to kill me.
"Detective work isn't much my thing, I usually just kill my targets and that's that." I try to explain. "I've never even tried nor actually cared about finding out who I was working for."
"I understand."
Now I think about it, I'm not really that different from a vampire. Sure, they kill for food and, at times, for fun, but I kill for money. Isn't that worse?
"Lucius and Lysander can do it." The Immortal states. "Surprisingly enough they are quite good in finding people. I suppose it is due to the years they have spent tracking down girls and preying on them, they love a good hunt."
I wanted to vomit just thinking about the two blonds running around and hunting down innocent women.
"I have made you feel uncomfortable."
"It doesn't matter. We have arrived, I already feel better." I open the door and start running inside the forest and towards my home, my family and my source of power.
I feel the vampire catching up on me and running by my side. I am surprised by the fact I actually don't mind him being here anymore, I feel safer when he's around.
"That's just because your powers were down." The little voice in my head reminds me.
"Right."
I stop abruptly and look at the view in front of me.
"But..." I don't understand what's happening, I must be hallucinating.
"I had it rebuilt." Alexandros stands next to me with his impassive face.
"Oh." It's the only thing I can manage to say, the sight of my new house has made me speechless.
It looks like my old little cottage, only a little bigger and with beautiful stone walls.
"I gathered you liked it better small and cozy." I can feel his eyes on me now, studying me intently.
"Yes, you were right, I was never one for a fancy house. Though I wouldn't have minded a hot tub." I joke.
"That can be arranged." He seriously says.
"I was just joking, you know." I smile at him and walk closer to it. "Thank you, this is wonderful, really."
"You are very welcome." I see something on his face that vaguely reminds me of a smile and laugh shaking my head.
"I thought that, since we are going to work on this matter together, I had to prove my good intentions."
"You couldn't have chosen a better way."
I extend my arms outwards and throw my head back as I start channeling energy from the earth beneath me. I float above the ground as yellow and green light start flowing inside me and I welcome it feeling instantly stronger.
"You're back." My mother's voice calls to me. "We thought you had left forever."
"I would never leave you." I whisper as the air goes back to its normal colour.
"This is something I find hard to get used to." Alexandros comments lying against a tree.
I shrug and push the door to my home open.
"At least I'm not the one sucking blood."
He doesn't reply.
"Hello, baby." I pick Tinkerbell up and she starts purring.
"Who is it that you would never leave?" Alexandros suddenly appears by my side, so close he could nearly touch me.
"Pardon?" I raise my brow in confusion.
"Earlier, when you were powering up."
"Oh, that. My family, their spirits live inside this earth. They talk to me sometimes." I stroke the white fur in my arms lovingly, trying to avoid any eye contact with him and feeling strange about him being so close.
He nods, still impassive, but his eyes betray him this time. I can see them sparkling with uncertainty.
"I have something to confess to you." He whispers caressing my cat too and touching my hand in the process.
I don't dare looking up to him, scared about what he's about to say.
"Despite my best efforts not to, I fear I might have developed feelings for you. Your striking beauty and, most of all, your fearlessness and wits have bewitched me, a feeling a cold and heartless creature as myself never thought possible."
My heart starts hammering inside my chest so loudly I'm afraid he might hear it.
I am unable to speak a single word, confused and utterly shocked by this revelation. I myself had been thinking about how hot he was, but feelings? That was a whole different matter.
He raises my chin so that my eyes are forced to meet his.
His blue orbs are filled with a tenderness I didn't think a vampire, let alone an Immortal, possessed.
"I don't know what to say." I stutter.
"You don't have to say anything." He closes the distance between us and his soft full lips brush against mine.
I start melting inside and, at the same time, a tingling sensation takes me over. I push against him and deepen the kiss, his hand caresses my cheek and moves a strand of my blond hair away from my face.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here?"
Sorry for the cliffhanger, I guarantee you it's worth it once you see what's coming next!
