Joey's POV~

I awoke to the soft sound of crying.

I cracked my eyes open and recoiled a bit at the bright lights above me. I blinked a couple times, waiting for my eyes to adjust. My neck was stiff and my head felt groggy. A numbness encased my body, but it was definitely favorable to the pain I had felt before. My side was tight, and I suspected I had just gotten out of the emergency room yet again.

I turned my head to the side, looking over to the source of the crying. To my left, there was a window in the wall, and behind the glass, Shane sat, his head in his hands and his shoulders shaking with sobs. I opened my mouth, softly uttering, "Sh-Shane...?"

He looked up, moving closed to the window and pressing his hands to the pane. "Joey," he murmured, his face scrunching up. "Joey, I'm so sorry... We never should've fought, I... I could've lost you..." His breath fogged on the glass. "Before I met you, I... I never believed in love. But you..." he started to get choked up. "You've shown me it does. You trust me so much to do the right thing... I-I'm so afraid of failing you."

"I-it's..." I breathed in. "It's okay. You... you're the best thing that ever happened to me, Shane." My fingers were shaking, and I pulled the sheet up higher over my chest. "C-come in here."

Shane moved to the door, looking up and down the hall before twisting the knob and slowly pushing it open. "I'm not supposed to be here," he filled me in. "Family only, but you know what? That's bullshit. I swear, Joey, I'm never leaving your side again."

He held both my hands in his, nearly kneeling next to the bed. "Joey, you have to make me a promise."

"Anything for you," I forced a weak smile.

"That you'll take better care of yourself in the future." My heart stopped as even more regret filled me up. I knew he was talking about going to the doctors. I bit my lip, looking away. He reached up, placing his hands on either side of my face. "Babe, I... I'm terrified I'm going to lose you. Maybe, if you agree to seek out medical help when you need it, I won't have to feel like this anymore."

I breathed out, closing my eyes. "Alright, Shane. I promise."

He smiled. "That's my Joey." He leaned in and gently kissed my forehead. "Even though we started out kind of rough, I don't want this to end. Not ever."

This beautiful moment was painfully ended as a doctor walked in and angrily demanded, "What are you doing here? I thought I told you to wait outside!"

"You can't keep me away from him," Shane stood defiantly by my bedside.

"I'm going to have to ask you to leave." The grip on her clipboard tightened and her jaw was clenched.

Shane didn't move. She grabbed a radio from her belt and ordered into it, "Security, room 24-601."

An impossibly short time later, two husky guys in suits busted in and grabbed Shane by the arms, pulling him out. He reached towards me, distress on his face. I felt the tears preparing again. I grabbed his outstretched hand in mine. "I-It's ok, Shane, just go."

After a struggle, they finally managed to get him out. I put my hands over my face, not wanting the doctor to see me cry. I felt a gentle hand on my arm and looked up to see her gentle face. "Joey?" she asked, her voice low and sweet. "I'm Dr. McFarland." When I didn't react, she stopped talking for a moment. "I'm sorry," she finally said. "Please understand that this is all for your own health... you're still at a very high risk for infection, and exposure to outside sources could be lethal."

I opened my mouth to say something in retaliation, then stopped myself. Promise that you'll take better care of yourself. Shane's voice was still fresh in my memory. "I understand," I plainly said, clasping my hands in my lap. "Do you know when I'll be able to see him again?"

"In 24 hours you should be good to have visitors in again, but we're planning on keeping you here for the next few days, just to make sure that nothing like this will happen again," she explained.

I exhaled. "Okay. As long as you're sure it'll help me get better."

She paused, looking down at her hands. "I can tell he's very special to you."

I looked up, my eyes widening. She met my gaze, smiling slightly. I, too, formed a grin. "Yeah... yeah he is. Without Shane, I... I'd be lost."

"Well, don't worry, we're going to do everything in our power to make sure you two can be together as quickly as possible." She stood up again, picking up her clipboard. "So, Joey, how are you feeling?"
