All Sans could hear was the crackle of the fire, as he sat in front of the fireplace with a blanket wrapped tightly around him. He was hungry and sleepy, but his father would be back soon, and he had to wait until then. Though he was only five, Sans stayed home alone often, when his dad was working at the lab. He used to beg his dad to let him help out with the experiments, and his dad had promised him he could help when he was older.
Sans was home alone now, and before his dad had left, he had begged to come with, just like usual. But his father had told him instead to stay home, and that there would be a surprise for him when he returned.
When is he going to come back? Sans wondered.
Almost on cue, Sans' father walked through the door. He was wearing a long white labcoat, and a black shirt and pants. Sans' eyes drifted up to his father's arms. He was holding some sort of bundle, wrapped up in orange cloth.
"Ready to see your surprise, Sans?" His father asked.
"Yes!" Sans said excitedly, hopping up onto the sofa.
"Alright." His father laughed, handing him the bundle. "Careful, it's breakable." He winked.
"Okay!" Sans turned his head. "What is it?"
His father laughed. "Why don't you open it up and find out?"
"Oka-" Sans stopped mid word. The bundle just made a sound. Not like a buzzing sound or a clicking sound, it was a high-pitched noise. Sans looked up at his father questioningly. What was in this bundle?
"Go on." His father ushered.
Sans looked back down at the bundle and unwrapped it slowly. He gasped and almost dropped the bundle when he saw what was inside.
Inside the bundle was a little baby skeleton. He squeaked in delight and started to laugh when he saw Sans. Sans stared at it for a minute, then looked back up at his father. He didn't know what to do with this baby.
"This is your new baby brother, Sans."
Sans' eyes shone with excitement, surprise and love as he looked down at the little bundle. It laughed and snuggled into his lap further. "What's his name?" Sans asked.
"His name is Papyrus." Sans' father answered.
"I will protect you forever, Papyrus. I won't let anyone hurt you, for as long as I live. And that is a promise I will keep until the end of time." Sans told it. It let out a little giggle.
And that was the moment Sans' life was changed forever.
