Chapter 8: It should have been me!

Hermione woke up, feeling giddy. She heard some voices and lifted her head as the voices grew louder and she came back to reality.

"Draco?" Hermione whimpered, trying to open her eyes a little.

" Granger! Are you alright?" Draco asked rushing to her. Hermione nodded slowly.

"Well, what do we have here? Draco... really? This mudblood?" Lucius said quietly, in a creepily low voice.

"So what if it's her? I've told you a hundred times! No matter what, nothing's going to change!" Draco shouted at his father.

" How will the dark lord think of you?" Lucius shook his head.

"The dark lord is gone!" Draco said, anger evident in his voice.

"How dare you! How dare you speak of the dark lord with such...NONCHALANCE!" Lucius spat out the last word before pointing his wand at Draco.

"Cruc..." Lucius started but was cut off. "STUPEFY!" a quivering voice rang out. A thud was heard and Draco turned to see Hermione on the floor.

Draco quickly realized that Hermione was the one who cast the spell and ran to her.

All the color had drained from her face. Draco reached into his robes and pulled out a small bottle that contained a gold substance.

"Here, drink it...it'll make you feel better." Draco said before he was shot by another curse from his father, who had gotten to his feet.

Hermione uncorked the bottle and drank its substance. She felt the energy in her hands and feet again and pushed herself off the floor, facing Lucius.

"Petrificus Totalus!" Hermione screamed.

Lucius jerked his wand away from Draco's direction and dodged the spell.

"Isn't it sweet? The mudblood defending and helping the little blood traitor we have here?" Another voice was heard.

Hermione recognized it as Fenrir Greyback's croaky voice.

She pointed her wand at him but saw that there were countless more figures standing in the dark... More death eaters were present.

" Look out!" Draco shouted as he saw a jet of green light shooting towards Hermione.

He threw himself in front of Hermione and took the spell. He fell onto the floor, lifeless.

"Well, looks like our work here is done." Lucius said as he and the other death eaters left, leaving Hermione alone with a lifeless Draco.

"No! It should have been me! Why were you so foolish, Malfoy?" Hermione cried and screamed, her screams echoing off the walls of her room.

She then felt a warm hand placed on hers. " Stop exaggerating, Granger. I'm fine." Hermione turned and saw a perfectly healthy Draco next to her, his signature smirk gracing his lips.

"Am I seeing things?" Hermione asked with a dazed expression. Draco shook his head, a chuckle escaping his lips.

Hermione looked at him with a questioning look and as brown met grey, Draco grinned.

"I think I should explain..."
