"Star Wars?" Jordan asked, waving a collectors box at me.
"Of course. What else?" I plump up my pillow and lay back.
"Hey! That's where I sit." Jordan whined.
"We're in your room. You dont have a specific place." I pointed to the quilt next to me. "You can always sit here."
He grins slyly, and wriggles next to me. I frowned at him.
"Ok. Not that close."
"Sorry." He edged away.
Star Wars came on and I nearly jumped out of my skin because it was so loud.
"Turn it down you knob!" I shoved him and he chuckled.
Once the volume was low enough that it didnt deafen us, the movie began. I loved C3PO and R2D2. The way 3PO was always thinking he was right and the posh way he talks and how R2 made that little screaming noise when the Jawas shocked him.
Jordan nestled down into his football covers, his back resting against the poster of Avenged Sevenfold. I adored his room, though it was very similar to mine. Black walls and band posters and Monster cans littered around the floor, countless tubs of hair gel and straighteners and Lynx sprays.
His hand found mine in the dark and my heart leapt into my throat.
"I missed you." He said. Then he coughed awkwardly, covering his face with his hands. "It's been ages."
"I only live thirty minutes away by foot. Would it kill you to drive?" I turned my head to face him, my black razored fringe laying across my face.
He fiddled with his nose ring. "But I wanted you here. Your parents are dead strict! No shoes in the house, no talking at the table, you break it and you pay for it." He shot me a look of apology. "Sorry, I didnt mean to offend you. I just havent seen you in months and I know I saw you at school, but that wasnt enough Alexs. I wanted to be with you all the time because it's so hard being different and then you came and-" Jordan stopped, his breathing shallow. "I need to take a walk. I'll see you in a bit."
"But it's dark. There could be strangers around." I grabbed his wrist as he climbed over me and pulled on some jeans. "Jordan, dont leave."
"I'll be back in ten minutes, tops. Stay here, okay?"
I opened my mouth to protest, but he cut me off.
"Please?"
His voice was full of concern and sorrow. It was like his words were little pins, every time he told me to stay where I was, his words held me in place.
"God damn you and your persuasive-ness." I scowled. He grinned, tightening the strings on his hoodie.
I jumped up and ran to him. "Please come back safe."
He wrapped his arms round me and hugged me tight.
"I will."
Jordan sauntered casually out the door like vanishing to god knows where in the middle of the night was something he did for fun. Who knows, maybe it was. Everyone else was asleep. It was 12:47 and I wasnt tired yet. I promised to stay awake until Jordan returned in one piece.
At 1:09 I couldnt take it anymore. I stopped nervously chewing my lip and threw on my Batman hoodie and a spare pair of black jeans that Jordan always had. I grabbed the knife that I kept in my pocket in case I got mugged. I slipped into my Converse and tiptoed down the stairs. The gentle ticking of the clock soothed me a little because it always had a pattern. And I liked that.
The front door let out a loud creak and I cringed. If Fiona or Christofer saw or heard me, what would I say? Most importantly, I had to try and not wake Quinn. He would start crying then ask for me to put him to sleep. But when someone spied me sneaking out the front door, how could I explain it? Hi Fiona, Jordans gone and I'm going to find him. Dont worry, ive got a knife.
Oh yeah, so reassuring.
I stepped out onto the driveway and shut the door behind me. I had to find him.
