Finding Out

"I'm sorry Trista," Hermione says, comforting me in a hug.

"Is this why you guys avoided me? Why everyone avoids me?" I ask finally starting to understand.

"Yes Trista, we were scared of you and what you might do," Hermione says closing the book and putting it back on the shelf.

"Oh Hermione it all makes sense! People aren't scared of me, I haven't done anything to them. They're scared of my mother."

Hermione walks over to the section in the library with all the Daily Prophet newspapers. She flicks through until she finds one with the words 'AUROR'S TORTURED' on it, and opens to page three.

"Here, read this," Hermione instructs and I sit down on a nearby table.

In Novemeber, 1981, two Death Eaters were captured after torturing two highly ranked Aurors. The Death Eaters appear to be brothers Rubastan and Rodolphus Lestrange. The pair have been sentenced to life in Azkaban and the Aurors, unfortunately, are not expected to make a recovery. Also after the fall of He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named...

I look up at Hermione, my eyes wide with misbelief. "My Dad is in Azkaban?" I ask. "For torturing someone?"

"You didn't know that either?" Hermione questions sounding shocked.

"No, my Mother told me he died in the First Wizarding War. My gosh Hermione, my family are monsters!" I say, tears rolling done my cheeks. "How did I not know this?" I sob. "How?!"

Hermione was dumbfounded. We stood looking at each other for a very long time without speaking.

"I just can't believe this...I'm the daughter of a man who tortured someone and a woman who follows Voldemort. It's no wonder she doesn't let me read the paper. It has information about her kind of people."

Hermione leads me up to our dorms and, because everyone was at dinner, we went up to our room in peace. I had so many thoughts running through my head it was overwhelming.

"Hermione, what should I do?"

"What do you mean?" She asks, clearly confused.

"Well I can't go home! What if she makes me become one of them?! I'm not like her!" I start to panic.

"Trista it will be okay! We will figure something out," Hermione tries to reassure me.

"Hermione, I promise, I'm nothing like her, or my father. I'm so sorry," I apologise.

"Trista you don't need to apologise, we know that you aren't. I think what you should do right now, is write her."

"WHAT?" I yell completely shocked.

"You heard me, you need to write to her and tell her your not coming home for Christmas this year. Then, we will write my parents and ask them if you can stay with me."

I look up with glassy eyes. "Let me stay with you?" I ask in awe. "You'd let me do that?"

"Of course Trista, we're best friends." I engulf her in a big hug and only pull away to wipe my tears that were flowing constantly. I couldn't stop them. I was upset, angry and happy all at once. It was the strangest I had ever felt.

"Shall we go get dinner?" I ask, finally pulling myself together.

"Sure."

We go down to dinner, getting some strange looks as we were really late. We just manage to put our food on our plate when the dinner disappears and dessert is served.

Ron looks at me with an eyebrow raised and I laugh and tell him, I'll talk to him later.

Harry was looking nervous and I assumed it was because of the first Quidditch game of the year tomorrow. We were playing Slytherin and I badly wanted to kick their butts.

I eat my dinner in record speed so I don't miss out on the chocolate pudding for dessert. The hall empties as people finish off their meals and soon it is just Harry, Ron, Neville, Hermione and I.

"So..." Ron starts looking at me, "what were you late for?"

"Oh that. Yeah, I found out that my parents are Death Eaters."

"You didn't know?" Neville asks giving me a strange look.

"No," I say, trying to read his expression.

"What are you going to do?" Harry asks.

"Not go home, that's for sure," I say and crack a small smile. I turn to Harry, "you have to win tomorrow Harry, you have to. And when your playing, can you try to hit Draco off his broom?"

"I always do," he says and we laugh.

Later, just before we need to be back I our dorms I send a letter to my mother saying.

Hello.

I'm not coming home for Christmas this year.

Trista.

It was blunt and I liked that. Hopefully she will get the hint I'm extremely annoyed at her.

I send Mimi off with the letter after stroking her lovingly. I hadn't seen her for ages so she had been reluctant to leave after all the petting.

As I was leaving the owlery I, yet again, bumped into Logan as he was heading up, letter in hand.

"What do you want?" I ask as he stares at me. The moon light shinning through the open windows was bouncing different shadows around and it was hard to see his expression.

"I heard you found out about your parents," he says and I roll my eyes.

"Yes I did. And as you can see, I'm just thrilled by the news," I answer sarcastically.

"I thought Draco had lied about you being one too, but I can believe it now since your whole family is. And especially with the rumours You-Know-Who is returning."

"Wait, you think I'm a Death Eater?" I ask, the words echoing.

"Trista, I tried to believe otherwise. But when Draco told me, my suspicions were confirmed - even though I didn't want them to be. Draco is your cousin after all, how wouldn't he know?"

"He's a liar, Logan. I'm not one of them."

"Trista, it's okay. I've been recruited too."

Logan pulls up his sleeve, and I see it. The unmistakable tattoo of the Dark Mark.

The mingling feelings I had previously felt for Logan, now made me feel sick to the core.
