We all bounded down the stairs, eager to get out and on the road. Kaden and Audrey seemed excited to be going- especially Audrey, who happened to love guns- but I was almost more anxious than excited. I was going to meet an accent greek god. That seemed so crazy! Not only that, but the god of war. I don't live my life in fear, and I have made some reckless decisions and done some crazy things, but this was about to top the list and I was feeling it.
But i'm also not one to waver or freeze up. So that small percentage of curiosity and excitement drove me eagerly down the stairs and into the car. Hopping into the backseat with Audrey, Kaden took the passenger seat, and off we went away from Kaden's house. The drive was downtown and would take only about an hour with good traffic so I settled in for small talk and the long ride.
Later in the car ride Audrey to laugh and point out the window.
"That's where Jack and I ended up on our latest expedition." She laughed, and I looked at the small shady motel on the side of the highway.
"Y'all know that isn't safe." Kaden said shaking her head, but laughing.
"So how did you and Jack meet?" I asked Audrey, and she smiled, completely at ease.
"When I was younger I turned down my mom's offer to be a hunter of Artemis." Audrey explained and I gave her a confused look. "My mom recruits girls to be her hunter, they never age and never get sick, so long as they swear off boys forever." Audrey explained. "Anyway I was eight and chose not to and wandered off on my own for almost two years before I finally came to a library somewhere in Maryland." She explained with lack of any kind of detail. But something occurred to me.
"How old are you Audrey?" I asked it occurring to me that I didn't know how old any of my new friends where.
"I just turned fifteen," she said proudly.
"And how old are you Kaden?" I asked, and she smiled.
"I'm almost sixteen, as are Ian, Riley, Jack is sixteen though." She said, finishing my question for me.
"The librarians turned out to be literal monsters, and while I was fighting them a boy managed to take one out. His name was Jack. We ended up traveling together on our own for years before Kaden and her dad found us, with our poison in full swing at the nearby park." Her voice was calm and simple, as if the word poison hadn't been in the situation at all.
"Poison? When did you get poisoned?" I questioned, and Audrey signed.
"While we were wandering, Apollo learned that I existed, the first time we met him he tried to kill me with a poison called Alacimix poison. Basically what happens is someone puts this poison on a blade mixed with someone's blood, in this case Apollo's. When the blade comes in contact with a being it caused a wound and a scar where the poison settles. Than the poison takes effect, whenever the person whose blood mixed with the poison comes within the vicinity of the poisoned person, the poison reopens the wound and makes that person very sick. Both get worse the closer the person comes." Audrey explained, and I sat there silently. "But he didn't get me, Jack stepped in front of me and took the poison." She explained.
"So does just he have the poison?" I asked wide eyed, that was pretty hard to take in.
"No," Kaden stepped into the story now, "eventually Apollo did get Audrey, but with Cyronics poison. It comes from the same family of poison opening when Apollo gets within a certain range, but her range is wider than Jack's and she doesn't get sick, she only has to worry about the wound." Kaden finished and Audrey nodded her agreement. We sat there for a little while in silence, letting me soak up what they had said. Only broken a few minutes.
