Bzzzz
I felt my phone buzz causing me to wake up. I looked around and noticed the movie credits on the screen and the smell of hot chocolate take over the room.
I smiled when I realized where I was and who I was with.
I looked up and noticed I had fallen asleep with Clyde on the couch.
My head was leaning on his shoulders and his arm was wrapped around my back.
I didn't remember falling asleep like this?
I slowly got up to get my phone that was lying on the coffee table.
I gasped when I saw what the text said
Claire,
I am truly deeply horrifiedly sorry for running out on you. I just cant stand...
You know, you have to much to worry about and I don't want to make matters worse. I just wanted to say sorry and thanks for being such a good friend.
You were always there when I needed you.
Yet I wasn't. Now I'm mentally and physically lost.
What I'm trying to say is goodbye. Don't expect me at school, around town, anywhere. I just can't stand it anymore.
I kept on reading over the text.
No way she can't be gone.
What was she gonna do...
I needed to respond and fast.
Rylan...
Thanks for being a great friend I truly am gonna miss you.
I hit send and saw the read sign signaling me she had viewed the text. Then heard Clyde's phone go off.
He slowly woke up and saw me then smiled
"Good Morning." He said while rubbing his eyes. "What time is it?"
"It's only 3 I woke up because I heard my phone go off." I stated
"Who was it from."
I looked down at the floor and I felt a hand on my back "you okay?" Clyde asked
"Check your phone I think I know who it's from."
He looked at me confused then unlocked his phone.
His eyes widen
"What's it say?" I asked
"Clyde...
I'm sorry for leaving everyone at the funeral. I know we started off rough and we never had a true conversation without one of us yelling, but you were truly one of the brothers I never had. What I'm trying to say is goodbye. I can't stand this anymore so I left. Don't worry about me..."
I felt my eyes water up.
"What's going on."
It didn't take both of us long to realize what she was gonna do... she was gonna try and kill herself.
Before we knew it Clyde was tracking down the location on where the text had came from while I called Emmery telling him to come to my house. Once Clyde found out the location it was no surprise to any of us that the location was a hospital.
By now we were all running to the hospital hoping our friend was still alive.
When we ran inside I was the one to do the talking.
"Claire Tucker?" I heard my doctor say
"Is everything alright"
"With me yes with my friend I don't think so."
"I'm sorry I don't know what you are saying."
"Do you have a patient Rylan Watters?"
"Ah yes she's on floor 3 room 6. You can go see her but I'm pretty sure she's sleeping."
"Thank you."
I said while walking back to my friends who anticipated in the waiting room.
"So what's the news?" Emmery asked
"She's okay and we can go see her."
"Well what are we waiting for." Emmery questioned.
We all ran up the stairs totally avoiding the elevator in general. As we opened the doors of the staircase hall my eyes immediately were drawn to a patient in a wheel chair who was wearing a military hat.
I smiled and walked up to him
"Thank you for our service."
He nodded then looked at me for a second "you're Eric Tucker's daughter aren't you?"
I nodded, people always said I looked like my dad but I had no idea we looked so alike some random stranger could tell.
"He was a good man sorry for the loss."
I smiled and walked away back to my friends.
"Who was that?" Clyde asked
"I don't know just someone my dad knew I guess." Things between Clyde and I have been a little more awkward ever since we fell asleep on the couch together.
"Where's Emmery?" I asked noticing he wasn't there.
"He had to go home to do something he said he'll be back soon."
"Well let's go." I said while walking in Rylans room.
My heart sunk when I saw Rylan it's crazy how in a couple hours something like this can happen.
I walked next to her bed and sat down and began talking to her unconscious body
"Hey Rylan, I know you can't hear me but I just wanna say I hope you're doing great and you'll be up and talking in no time.
You know when I said I promised I'll never scare you the way I did in the hospital that one night It didn't mean you can do the same thing." I said laughing a little bit.
I kept looking and waiting for a respond but nothing happened she just laid there.
"Claire we have to go soon." Clyde said
I nodded and got up.
I watched her lay there the whole time as I walked out of the room hoping she would wake up.
Nothing
That whole day at school Clyde Emmery and I only thought about Rylan so when school finally did end we headed straight to the hospital again.
When we reached the hospital again she was still sleeping.
"Has she woke up since we were gone?" I asked the nurse in the room
"She was up about an hour ago."
I squeezed Clyde's hand
"We just missed her." I sighed
"She'll be up soon." He said in response
2 hours, we were at the hospital for 2 more hours Clyde and I had done everything, ate at the cafeteria, played tik tak toe with the elders, read the kids who had cancer a book, raced in wheelchairs down the hall (obviously we tied), had a competition on who could stack the gross hospital room jell-o the highest (it ended with Clyde losing and his jell-o falling over making a mess in Rylans room), talked to the doctors and asked them tons of medical questions practically quizzing them, and lastly visiting all the new born babies in the nursery.
Now we were just siting in her room watching tv.
"Wow that was actually a really good season finale." I said
"I know right I was expecting it to end boring but-"
"Hey guys." We heard a faint whisper.
We both looked around and smiled.
"Rylan thank godness you're okay!" I said in relief as Clyde stared at the floor.
She nodded then blurt out "I'm so sorry guys, I didn't mean for this to happen to you guys, in fact I meant to be d-" she then mumbled something I didn't hear but Clyde did causing his head to shoot up and his eyes widen.
"So do you remember anything that happened." Clyde asked.
Her smile dropped as if she was nervous.
"Yeah and I'm sorry" she said a little louder than a whisper as tears began forming in her eyes.
"It's fine." I smiled "I just remember when I was in the hospital and I promised I'll never scare you like that again then it happens again a day later but to you."
"I think I need to take my own advice." She laughed.
"why'd you do it?" Clyde asked
I watched as she started tensing up and looking around the room.
"Where's Emmery?" She asked changing the subject.
"He's coming." I laughed a little knowing something between those two are going on.
"But why'd you do it?" Clyde said slowly not breaking eye contact with Rylan as he had absolutely no expression on his face.
"Well it all started with..." she told us everything the whole story.
"Now you know my dad was a killer, my mom was an alcoholic, my dad is dead, and my mom left my brother and I." She sighed.
I looked down at my lap not wanting to look into her eyes knowing I'll be able to see the pain.
I looked over slightly as Clyde began
"I-I-I'm so sorry" seeing the expression of regret and sorrow on his face was all too much I felt a tear escape my eye.
"I would never yell at you for something I didn't know about." He stated
That last sentence confused me when did they fight?
"Why didn't you tell us before?" I asked quietly.
"I never wanted you to deal with this." She said referring to the hospital.
"But we could've helped, you don't have to hide anymore." Clyde smiled
She nodded "you know what I meant every word I texted you guys about how much I'll miss you, I mean who could part with friends like you guys."
I smiled as Clyde laughed faintly.
"So when will you be released?" I asked
"I don't know but they're putting me on these antidepressants." She groaned
"Hey as long as they help it'll be worth it." Clyde said.
"Yeah yeah okay but only because you told me too."
I laughed as I noticed Clyde's expression he had this smile on his face that made him seem so powerful and in control.
We talked for what seemed like hours when Emmery finally decided to show up.
"Sorry I'm late." Emmery sighed "how you felling?" He asked as his hands were tucked in his pocket.
"Just fine." She said smiling at him.
"I ship it so much" I whispered in Clyde's ear he laughed quietly "me too"
"So when are you being released." Emmery asked
"About 30 minutes ago a doctor came, she's leaving on Wednesday." Clyde said while smiling.
Soon enough all 4 of us would be back in the library eating lunch together Wednesday can you be here already?
